We've had this so many times over the years most recently last year with Alex Mowatt .

You put your best offer on the table but if another club can top it and usually they can significantly then what else can you do .

I can live with players under contract that have their heads turned because at least you get a fee that can be put towards a replacement .

But when you lose key players like we did with Mowatt and possibly yourselves with Smith for nowt it's a killer for clubs of our size .

I don't blame the player at all but none the less it's a tough one to take .

I sincerely hope he does sign a new deal because he'll be tough to replace .

You have to admire Stewart though for keeping a straight line and maintaining our club stays as near to the black line as possible. Thing is though, you’ll never progress unless you’re willing to dip your toe that bit further.

It’s common knowledge Stewart puts in a million pound a year himself so, maybe he’s looking to recoup some of that from the £7.1 million he’s about to receive.

There’s improved wages to pay the players for gaining promotion so that comes out of that money.

More charges for extra policing for when the bigger clubs arrive at the NYS. The sums do start to add up. What budget Stewart gives Warne we’ll never know.

Will this be the year Stewart gets that bit braver?

All this for a core support of about 8000?

Makes no financial sense to “ push the boat out” there’s no return on the investment

Absolutely isn't in our own hands. The future of Smudge is firmly up to him and his family.

7 million every year in the championship .

More when new contract gets sorted.

Bigger gates away end and home.

Charge more for advertising and sponsorship.

    Squad valuation goes up.

    On sky every Tuesday (paid)

    More appeal to investors.

Smudge banging in 25 goals in league 1 = 2 million.

Banging in 25 goals in championship = 5 million plus

    On a contract that is

Plus you don't know what the definition off "splashing the boat out" is.

    A extra thousand to 1.5k a week.

It's not going to be significant is it

Rhodes was on 60k a week at Blackburn.

As does every other championship club. Plus they have more. So how does any of that make, us in particular, competitive with championship sides financially?

We will still not be on sky as often as most clubs.
Our increased appeal to investors will still be below other clubs appeal.
Sponsorship will still not be the same because of x, y and z.
Squad valuation is no use if you aren't selling and then if you're selling you're depleting the product.
All contracts go up with promotions, eating into the 7mil. Alongside loads of other costs.

Even with base levels of money going up from various sources, we will be way way way behind most clubs and effectively punting when the 'business' (club) is likely to fail (in it's aim of staying up) makes no real financial sense.

You invest proportionally and hope that different factors fall your way. That then enables you to get a foothold to incrementally improve.

Unfortunately it doesn't seem to work that way .

The longer you stay in the championship the more expensive it gets .

When Stendel got us up in 2019 from league one the wage bill was around £8m , three championship season's later it's £14.6m .

Whilst I'd take the point Tony Stewart has more oil in his lamp than the those who ran the shyte show over here until recently it just goes to show how sticking around in the championship can eat the finances .

That said football is a risk and reward industry and there's no way around that unfortunately .
