In 2008 when Americans elected Obama, a majority thought race relations were improving. That held across race and party lines. Nobody thinks that anymore. What happened?

It was a lie that was eventually exposed.

Areas with low crime rates would still have them. Many parts of the US where guns are prevalent have low crime rates and few shootings. To the extent you have gang problems, you would see more shootings in those areas. The important variables are ethnicity and income rather than gun ownership.

Civil disturbances would take on a different look, to judge by the US. Rioting and looting are localized and do not spread into nearby suburbs. Residential areas are protected.

What about school shootings though?

Those are usually committed by young men who have got the guns legally (or taken them from their parents who got them legally).

Looking on from over here the American obsession with guns seems absolute madness.
How is it in reality Cam ?

The problem is TLC is that they don't know what it's like to live without them so simply assume that a world without guns to protect yourself = a world where you are automatically going to get murdered in your sleep. They will always come back to the argument that if criminals have guns then law abiding citizens need guns to protect themselves. It doesn't seem to work though but nobody wants to try something different. A scary statistic is that in the past 10 years gun violence has killed more kids in schools than law enforcement officers on the streets in the line of duty.

Another thing about the prevalence of guns, it makes you think twice about getting into even the smallest of disputes. 31 shootings so far this year around here in 'road rage' incidents. In England if the man walking his dog lets it sh!t on your lawn you'd have a go at him, here you'd better think about it because it doesn't seem to take much for something to escalate from petty argument to death.

In just the last month, 5 kids around here have been arrested for taking guns into schools. Beer at 18, nope. Cigarettes at 18, not likely. AR-15 rifle at 18, here you go son

Plus here in Britain knife crime is on the increase.

Very much a problem in the black community but that's a statistic that's rapidly swept under the carpet.
