Clint Eastwood and Eli Wallach for me Des.
I also used to enjoy Dennis Weaver as detective McCloud in the 70’s cop series.
“Well there ya go” 😎🤣

John Wayne is too mouthy and swaggering.
Clint's okay but he's Clint.
Henry Fonda is one of the best, but for me it's Randolph Scott. Laid back, confident and decisive. A touch of style.
James Stewart comes a close second and he would be my favourite if it wasn't for his voice. Drives me nuts after about half an hour.

Loved Cowboy films growing up, particularly the Black and White ones, I could easily watch one then another straight after.
It’s difficult to pick one, Clint Eastwood in the colour era is by far my favourite, closely followed by Paul Newman for the few he did. James Stewart and Henry Fonda had huge reputations but always struck me as being too nice and soft, nowhere near manly enough for the hero role but nevertheless good actors. A big favourite of mine was Clayton Moore who played the Lone Ranger, John Wayne never disappointed either, as with Richard Widmark and Glenn Ford.
There seemed loads of lead acts whose names I never really knew, each slightly different from the other but all worthy of the role. As an aside Gene Autry’s Champion the Wonder Horse is worthy of a mention.
Happy days.
Loved Lee Van Cleef and Kirk Douglas but so many. Even now would watch the Magnificent Seven films again!
Anybody remember Tom Mix![]()
My dad watched him when he was a kid.
Although Wayne isn't my favourite actor most of the classic westerns feature him. Red River and True Grit have both been remade but don't come close to the Wayne originals. The Searchers is one of the best of all time.
Kirk Douglas jumped about too much for me, but Burt Lancaster was good in the ones he did.
Shane is my favourite western but I don't think Alan Ladd was the right lead to play it. Maybe someone like Robert Taylor.
Whatever happened to all those cowboy films that used to br on the TV every Sunday afternoon back in the day? Perhaps it was to do with all those whoppings the Red Indians used to get from the nasty white cowboys at the end of each film that finished em off.
Although John Wayne is probably most associated with his Western films I personally prefer Clint Eastwood's. Many famous actors played in Westerns before Hollywood or the public lost interest in the genre though including the likes of Steve McQueen, Brando, Gregory Peck, Paul Newman etc.
Growing up in the sixties the two genres on tv that seemed to dominate were sci-fi/futuristic (Star Trek and all those Irwin Allen shows) and Westerns-Bonanza, High Chapparral, The Virginian, Branded and, later, Alias Smith and Jones.
