I have a degree of sympathy for this viewpoint but I seriously doubt that most women/girls would see abortion as simply a form of contraceptive nor view it as an easy decision to make. As baggieal rightly points out, people make mistakes (especially when young) and the consequences of going through with the birth could be considerable. These might range from the break up of a relationship, the girl not being able to go forward into education (and the impact of this on her life choices) or the state having to support her and baby.

As a film buff I've recently been rewatching old British kitchen sink dramas like Look Back in anger, Room at the top, Saturday night, Sunday morning and A kind of loving from the late 50s/60s. All remind us of the living standards and class attitudes of not so very long ago but also, in those pre-Pill years, of the pressures and consequences of unplanned pregnancies.

There need to be rules on access to abortion but I think this country generally has it right.
