Come on Banjo. If we take away transfer rumours that don't come off from NCM , then we might as well stop overreacting to when we lose 1-1 or trying to find excuses when we win as well#viva

I say the more the merrier whatever the sauce , all to be taken with a big pinch of salt, obviously.

Having watched the Basford and Alfreton games, I still think we need a physical presence in midfield. This has been missing for a number of seasons. The team still looks pretty small in terms of height and muscle.

I know it is early doors and only pre season games, but I think the midfield has looked far tougher in the tackle, Francis and Austin particularly. Only Vincent and McGregor look weak in that area to me, Matty Palmer is now having the ball given to him after being won by others so it takes away any weakness in his tackling. I have not noticed us coming off second best in heading duels in the midfield as yet but that could be an area of concern still.

Looking at the way we've played in the last two friendlies, we've had Francis or Bajrami playing defensive midfielder who then drops back into defence allowing the wing backs to push up more and not worry about leaving the flanks exposed when we lose the ball. Both Francis and Bajrami can play centre back so heading shouldn't be an issue if we play that system in the league and it also allows Palmer and another to raid forward as well.

I've noticed Francis has also bulked up a bit as well, I think we might be ok in midfield. I do think we need a target man though

I guess we haven't seen what Scott can do yet in terms of a target man, not even sure if that is how he was used for Gateshead. I wasn't overly impressed with Mitchell last night as a TM.

A target man is only relevant if our style of play requires one.
Wootton last season was a bit of an enigma. Not quite physically commanding enough to be a proper target man and not quick enough for us to put direct balls in the channels.
I suppose a target man gives us another plan if the team isn’t playing well and we need a plan B or C. But I can’t see a target man being required with what I expect plan A to be.

I agree that we might not need a traditional target man as we don't plan to launch direct balls into the opposition's half, but having someone with the ability to hold the ball up and bring others into play seems pretty important. That's what Wootton did so well. No idea if Scott is that kind of player.

In both games I have watched the full ninety minutes, their have been few balls played long down the middle, maybe due to a lack of pressure or intensity on our back three.
We do seem to be using a long cross field diagonal ball to the wing backs a lot, and generally they have been to feet, so negating the need for an out and out target man so far.

Tbf the use of a big strong target man seems less and less now and there’s probably less of them around as players making it through now are more technical than physical. Also if we aren’t going to play long and only do it as a last resort who will want to come. I think Scott said he can do a bit of everything and Ruben if he stays could easily do the role of what Wooton did last season. I agree with you it’s very noticeable how many diagonals we’re playing now and that’s going to result in crosses or players attacking the box so doubt we are going need a massive striker.
