What games did he affect that weren’t against teams who were sh!t? Especially in the second half of the season? What does he do which scares opposition players or fans? I take your point about the set pieces, we did miss him on those last night. To be fair though I think few people’s opinions of what constitutes a good player need re-calibration, we’ve obviously been rubbish for too long. He looked best when playing with Vincent, who did all the running for him.

I think he’d be a lot easier to replace than Roberts, though we could have done with all this sorting out a few weeks ago if it is happening.

Kante? They’re completely different types of players, though I’m sure Matt Palmer would enjoy the comparison. As you say, Kante at his best runs, tackles, gets into the opposition half and makes things happen. He was fantastic in the Champions League final last year. We regularly got swamped by the better sides in this league last season.

Obviously we need different types of players, that’s why I said Palmer was more effective when he had Vincent beside him. For whatever reason Burchnall didn’t rate him, let’s hope he or one of the new recruits works out better this season. The early signs last night were good.
