Not sure about that army, I agree it's not unknown for managers to attempt to weaken the opposition, I'm sure Pulis strung us along all summer once chasing Dawson, with never the slightest intention of letting him go, it back-fired in a way because I think we had to sign Michael Keane right at the end of the window as a result, so it didn't turn out too badly for us, and I'm sure Liverpool re-signed Ian Rush when Aldridge was already scoring for fun for them, simply to stop him signing for anyone else.

But Wood wasn't scoring for us and Eddie bunged us way over the odds at £25 million. That money allowed us to sign the 4th top scorer in the Bundesliga and go for Orsic. If Orsic hadn't changed his mind at the last minute and Wout had scored just a couple of the sitters he missed we would probably have stayed up. Eddie buying Wood gave us the money that could have kept us up, it didn't turn out that way, but Eddie wasn't to know that, if he was being devious, he was lucky to get away with it.

I think that Eddie had done his homework because the facts are there to see.
Chris Wood appeared in 144 PL games for the Clarets. Prior to Christmas in the seasons played he made 79 appearances and scored 18 goals.
After Christmas, mainly the second half of the season, he made 65 appearances and scored 31 goals, including 9 goals in 20 matches in 2020/21 when he had scored just 3 in 13 matches before Christmas.
When Eddie signed him he had appeared in 17 matches and scored 3, it is anyones' guess what may or may not have happened in the second half of the season, particularly if Cornet had been providing crosses in the 17 matches he played post Christmas.
Que sera, sera -----was Eddie clever ------or just lucky? sinkov, you are a betting man ---what are the odds?

No idea about the odds Sub, but if Eddie wanted to stitch us up, it doesn't seem logical to me to bung a cash-strapped club £25 million in the middle of a transfer window for a £10 million player. He gave us a Get Out of Jail Free card, but being Burnley we didn't play it right well.

As I said earlier, he has nothing to prove at all and his defensive work is also excellent as he proved on Sunday against Man City when he came on.
Don't forget he played for Burnley, so very few of those goals would be from penalties

Exactly Sinkov in that he isn’t / wasn’t worth 25 million but the buy out clause allowed them to take him - they didn’t buy him to be their saviour , just to disjoint us - like I’ve e said before though we weren’t in any state to compete and survive in the premiership if we had stayed up, so to drop down and re build was the best answer.

I won’t forgive Howe for that though imo he finished us off doing what he did.

That £25 million gave us the lifeline we needed to keep our head above water and buy us the time we needed to sort the squad out.

I'll say "Thank you very much Eddie" - top man.

We bought weghorst who Dyche didn’t want anyway - didn’t want Cornet either tbh.

Wood became what can only be described as a bit part player for them - a stop gap at best but importantly for them weakening us.

I don't see how it weakened us army, Wood had scored 3 goals in 17 games, Weghorst scored 2 goals in 17 games, we swopped like for like, one non-scoring striker for another non-scoring striker, and had £12 million pounds burning a hole in our pocket into the bargain. That money could have been used to strengthen the squad and help us stay up, but it wasn't, not Eddie's fault, he gifted us the money to use as we saw fit. Whatever the causes of our relegation, Eddie Howe wasn't one of them.
