    Jed Wallace and Grady Diangana

How long has it been since we have had to direct proper wingers? I love to see speedy wingers getting to the line and crossing the ball. Much better than players passing side to side and back in the middle of the park. Our first half attacking stats told a story, 40% down the right, 39% down the left and just 21% in the middle of the box. As others have said it was stupid to let Andy Carroll go with no replacement. We would have won most of our games to date.

In my time in watching the Albion only Johnstone and Cunningham can be rated our greatest ever wingers. But also loved Peter Barnes who had the unenviable task of replacing Laurie. He was a lazy lump at times but when he was on fire he was absolute brilliance. Gera and Kilbane had their moments also. But other than these no one as ever really come close IMO.

Chippy Clark was the best, played 301 games for us and scored 81 goals.
Would have gone to score more ,but from a bad tackle in a preseason friendly after we won the FA Cup

He's still the best I have seen play for us. I would have him over Cunningham, Johnston and Barnes every time. He was part of a wonderful forward line in a team that won trophies or finished runners up. 98 goals he scored all told for us including scoring in every round of the 1967 league cup. God know how many assists, went passed defenders like they weren't there, good with his head too. Clark was a winner.

Johnston hands down. I remember Clarke, good player but Johnston got fans going the moment the ball was at his feet. Never heard anticipation like it.

I remember Clarke being very good too but Johnston and Cunningham were more my era so saw more of them. Both were great wingers and remember watching Laurie almost glide past players. A very graceful player (must have been all that dancing and ballet!). Willie was more typical of those 70s flair players who were real characters who entertained the fans and no one moaned about his show-boating as they might now. Unsurprisingly a firm favourite with supporters. As Phild says, Barnes had his moments but it was always going to be a big ask following in Laurie's boots. Those were the days..

My era too and loved both players and truly magical. For consistency I would go with Johnston but Cunningham had so much grace and on his day was unplayable. Both true legends.

Diangana and Wallace not a patch on Johnston and Cunningham of course .... but we were a decent side back in the late 70s. Good to see we have a couple of players who can run with the ball .... been lacking that since Pereira left. Just need someone in the box who can get on the end of things ....
