You'd be very surprised then. And the difference with Siegrist was he came to us as an inexperienced goalkeeper. He'd only played something like 40 professional games before landing at Tannadice. Eriksson, for someone as experienced as he is - almost 200 games as a keeper and a full International - is a total bombscare. He has no idea where he needs to be standing half the time, doesn't catch the ball and still hasn't learned from the Charlie Mulgrew OG that he should be coming wide and leaving his goal wide open. He did it again on Saturday. It's heart in the mouth stuff with him.

The rumours that were abounding regarding Eriksson in training while Siegrist was still here are unfortunately proving to be true IMO. He can’t catch the ball, comes for crosses he should leave and leaves crosses he should come for, he can’t pass the ball, his positioning is hopeless and yes he’s a decent shot stopper - but there’s the rub, shot stopper. He palms the ball away every.single.time. Often back in to dangerous areas.

I have no doubt this is affecting the back 4/5. They’re not just worrying about what’s in front of them, I suspect strongly they’re also worrying about what’s behind them as well. And it’s making us in to nervous wrecks at the back as a result. It’s Newman in for me - at the very least he can’t be any worse.

In fairness both their goals on Saturday had absolutely nothing to do with the keeper. Just poor defending from the defenders then midfielders.

Is it not that the 'bombscare' is in fact in front of him? I'd be keeching my breeks if I had these two imposters in front of me. Why not have a go at them?
I reckon they rate 12/12 on SPFL Prem central defenders.

Umm, because it's a goalkeeper thread in which you came on asking why the 'big backlash' against Eriksson.

Calibre of defenders in front of him should have nothing to do with his positional sense or inability to catch a ball. If anything, I'd say they are sh*teing themselves because they know what's behind them. Those two 'imposters' were absolute rocks in the defence last year.

I've never understood the term "good shot stopper" when referring to a goalkeeper. That's like saying a dentist is "no bad we yir teeth"

That is his first, and foremost job. Anything else added to his abilities just makes him (or her) a better goalkeeper. Catching crosses from open play, corners and free kicks seem like a bonus these days. Being able to distribute a ball is another. Taking a goal kick even (thinking Jim Leighton here) can maybe be added to a goalie's repertoire these days. But... if a goalie qualifies, and gets a good wage these days solely because he's a good shot stopper then standards have lowered beyond belief. In saying that, you can add that to every position on the park these days.

Who sanctioned this signing? He is an internationalist so that was the only requirement seemingly. I'd rather have no internationalists as these types of players have something to prove.

The last decent Finnish player we had was Mixu, who then came back as a manager and ruined his connection with United forever.

Is Newman not out on loan at Peterhead? They have been getting pumped nearly every week. Not saying that’s his fault but…
