I see Haughton won NLN player of the month in September (also scored twice on Saturday). Only issue there is his age - 28 - which wouldn't generally make him a Radar target. I was also impressed by Ryan Colclough when we played Alty the other week, but he's also 28 in December, so a similar "problem" there.
However, if we're aiming to go up, maybe we will need a few more signings of players in their late 20s who will hopefully have a few more great seasons in them, but perhaps don't not have any great resale value? (Worth noting that Ben Davies was also 28 when we signed him in 2009 and he definitely had a good resale value when we sold him about 18 months later.)
Young loanees are clearly more of a gamble than experienced pros (most for us have been more miss than hit in recent seasons), and there's obviously something to be said for not relying too much on loanees in a promotion race - as our neighbours would tell you.
Hopefully, someone in the media will ask LW this week if Saturday's defeat told him anything about the quality of his squad depth and if he's now looking to reinvest some of that Cal Roberts cash (especially with no transfer window at this level). The best teams always strengthen when they're at the top - that's why they stay there.
But we did score a brilliantly worked free kick against Wrexham that was straight off the training ground, so it’s not like we’re not working on stuff. Maybe we just don’t have enough tall players to be much of a threat at corners and we need to recognise that and look for more creative solutions?
Agree about lack of height. I would add physical presence. We don’t have any player who looks imposing. Most sides in the NL have 2/3 genuine threats from set pieces. We have IMO none. Yes we have players that can win headers (Rawlinson and Cameron) but neither looks a threat in the opposition box.
I suppose it’s pleasing that despite our lack of height we don’t concede more than we do from set pieces.
I'm sure the coaching staff are fully aware of our short comings in the height department hence with the reliance on near post corners which negates this to a large degree .
Not that it's seems to work mind

As far as my memory recalls, the deliveries weren't so good on Saturday. Austin often couldn't beat the first man, and when he did it flew over everyone for a goal kick.
Palmer took over, and didn't beat the first man. Then Ruben took one & whipped it in at pace but was cleared easily.
Good point about the lack of a physical presence - and you’re right about it being pleasing that we are generally keeping teams out from set-pieces (touch wood - and unlike previous seasons at this level). That was especially pleasing against Wrexham, given the height and bulk of at least half their side.
The Liverpool teams of the late70s/early 80s were interesting from corners. I remember them 'passing' most of their corners. Not short corners but crafty 20 yard passes to players making runs in the box, around the right-angle of the box etc. Dalglish was at the centre of this, sometimes taking them.
It's good strategy for guaranteeing 100% of corners go to your player, leads to penalties, crosses at unexpected times and angles and I reckon the opposition hate it.
Imagine if we surprised the opponent's by playing a short corner to Nemane or ideally Ruben to then simply have a run at a defender into the area? Gotta be worth a go every now and then.
