A lot of the time it’s the actual delivery, for all Palmers qualities, corner taking isn’t one, Rubens had a go and nothing special and I’m sure someone else has had a crack. Unless you’re going to whip a corner in with a bit of pace, past the first man, away from the keeper, you’re probably not going to score from many.

So we missed out on an away trip to Charlton Athletic in the first round.

I can't say i'm disappointed if i'm honest. Had we missed out on a tie against Derby, Mansfield or Sheffield Wednesday that would have been a different story though.

We'd have presumably had a different number to Coalville had we got through and there's also the butterfly effect, but it does stick in the throat to see teams who've knocked you out land a plum tie.

The last genuine big club we missed out on was Chelsea in 2016/17, pulled out of the hat as we were facing a replay at Peterboro, but that would probably have prolonged the Trew agony and we may have dropped out of the league a few years earlier.

Would we have kept the same number that Coalville had?

Yes. The numbers from 49 onwards relate to the qualifying round fixture, whoever wins it. The League 1 and 2 clubs just entering the competition would be the only ones going on alphabetical order from 1 to 48.

Would’ve been a horrible draw really, there’s already too many London away trips in the league as it is, wouldn’t be on tele or have a particularly big crowd to earn decent ££ and we’d be very likely to lose.

Plenty of draws in there that would’ve been a shame to miss out on, but that’s not one of them.

I think I once saw a statistic that 1 corner in every 42 results in a goal. That was many years ago and things may have changed.
