Now that is a very good question!
One of the problems with a democratic system is that it takes an awful lot of time and effort to become an MP. To enter politics you need to either have enough money to be financially independent (so have either inherited your wealth of made enough money early on in which case you are likely Conservative leaning) or else are funded by others like Unions (in which case you will likely be Labour leaning). Vast swathes of very capable people are therefore precluded from entering politics simply because they are too busy working to pay bills and raise families, however bright, competent or of good moral character they are. (As they remain overwhelmingly the ones who raise families, this is also why there are still fewer women in politics).
For me this explains both why so many politicians appear out of touch with "ordinary" people because they do not live ordinary lives as well as the polarisation of so many democratic political systems. Nature of the beast I guess. Messy and imperfect but better than alternative authoritarian regimes.
Just watched some clips of Conservative party members who now wish they hadn't voted for Liz. These people are truly thick! Did they really not understand what they were voting for? Truss was clear enough throughout her campaign what she would do and Sunak (and many others) were very clear about the consequences of this.
Problem is that many older Tories were swayed by her Maggie impersonation and loathe to vote for Sunak because he helped put the final nails into the coffin of their beloved Boris. But this isn't the 1980s and there isn't the need for Thatcher-esque policies as there was then and in any case Truss is way way dimmer than Thatcher even if she shares common beliefs and the lack of empathy or social conscience.
Sorry Mick, obviously did not make myself clear! Do not for one moment think Thatcher was dim and was in fact pointing out that Truss is staggeringly dim whereas Thatcher was far from that. Even though I disagreed with many of her policies and attitudes Thatcher was the one that grasped the nettle needed to correct years of unproductivity and mismanagement in the country. There are plenty of reasons why she is the most divisive PM in British history because she did enormous harm to many whilst also enabling a great many to improve their lot but she was anything but dim. My fault maybe but you misread the meaning of my post.
but to answer your key point...
As of July 2021, the United Kingdom has concluded four new trade agreements: with Japan; with its biggest trading partner, the EU; New Zealand and with Australia.
Nowhere near enough I grant you BUT- we have had a Tory government who do not and have never wanted to leave- look at the time they have taken
They have wanted to thwart the democratic will of the UK referendum
They have made a hash of leaving coz they did not want to
But it does not answer the issues about the chaos in Europe- why will re-joining solve those problems?- described by the Belgian prime minister as the de-industrialisation of Europe, look at the civil unrest - the fuel /energy crisis, the inflation- sure we got em - close an economy for 2 years you get inflation, sanction Europe's lead supplier of energy - this is what happens.
I do not want to be controlled by non-elected EU bureaucrats- you do- that's ok but the mess will be worse and we will have even less control over our fate
It's democracy - it's a bad system but it's better than everything else
When you say sanction Europe’s lead supplier of energy - do you mean Hitler 2 in Moscow? Are you suggesting we let Putin carry on executing and gang raping innocent citizens then when losing on the battle field - drones are flown into civilian residential areas? Maybe Ukraine should take the view eye for an eye and fly drones into Moscow! Oh but that may start WW3 you may say! So should a 70 year old crazed Nazi get away with all this as well as loosen the tap on the corrupt oil supply so Oligarch’s get even richer!
