O/T What exactly is a life sentence?

Maybe its too complicated the a life sentence means life? I.E. if you get life you leave prison in a coffin?? Or is that too simple.

Maybe dont have life sentences, have 25, 35, 45, or 55 year sentences with parole only becoming applicable once you've done your time?

Totally agree, 25, 35, 45, 55, must like their 5's apart from today

Sharia law is the way to go. For example,

1st offence - eg holding an illegal party during lockdown - hand off

2nd offence - eg fathering more than one child outside wedlock - ***** off

3rd offence - eg lying to parliament - head off.

I think public beheadings at NYS would be quite popular.

Thw judge has to follow sentencing guidelines that requires him or her to assess a range of factors. He also has to take any mitigation into account.

I believe the sentencing in this case was filmed for TV as part of a pilot scheme? If so, you will be able to see exactly how the 34 years was arrived at. It may make for quite dry viewing however

Yes I'm well aware it was on TV but will not waste any of my time trying to view it. Obviously the question of 34 years being given has even bypassed yourself. What a weird number? Why not round it up or down? I'm also aware he has taken off the time on remand 457 days?

The notion of rounding up and down doesn't really fit with the concept of precision in sentencing. If 34 years is what the judge considered appropriate then 34 years is the sentence he should give.

The type of sentence that you are suggesting was introduced in 2005 as the Indeterminate Imprisonment for Public Protection. They were abolished in 2012 after the government of the day noticed that the prisons were getting overcrowded.
