Upon receiving an application for release, the Parole Board gathers information about the prisoner - the nature of the original crime, the behaviour of the prisoner in prison, whether the prisoner has accepted guilt and assisted the authorities etc. They are also likely to require a psychiatric assessment.

The Parole Board then considers all the information and may order the prisoner's release if they are satisfied - insofar as it is possible - that they are no longer a risk to the public.

A person released from a life sentence is on life license and can be returned to prison if they offend again or breach any license conditions.

License conditions are likely to be strict at first - dictating where a person can live, prohibiting them from going to particular places etc. They will be supervised by a probation officer.
Kerr, I was expecting your legal eagle eye reply on this and you haven't disappointed, thank you.

Maybe its too complicated the a life sentence means life? I.E. if you get life you leave prison in a coffin?? Or is that too simple.

Maybe dont have life sentences, have 25, 35, 45, or 55 year sentences with parole only becoming applicable once you've done your time?

    Thst seems sensible to me.

The death penalty, not for me, its too barbaric in my opiniin. Just my opinion mind, I respect others!!

Riley, how does a Judge pull 34 years out of nowhere, what does 34 represent?

Totally agree, 25, 35, 45, 55, must like their 5's apart from today

Sharia law is the way to go. For example,

1st offence - eg holding an illegal party during lockdown - hand off

2nd offence - eg fathering more than one child outside wedlock - ***** off

3rd offence - eg lying to parliament - head off.

I think public beheadings at NYS would be quite popular.

The type of sentence that you are suggesting was introduced in 2005 as the Indeterminate Imprisonment for Public Protection. They were abolished in 2012 after the government of the day noticed that the prisons were getting overcrowded.

Thw judge has to follow sentencing guidelines that requires him or her to assess a range of factors. He also has to take any mitigation into account.

I believe the sentencing in this case was filmed for TV as part of a pilot scheme? If so, you will be able to see exactly how the 34 years was arrived at. It may make for quite dry viewing however

Yes I'm well aware it was on TV but will not waste any of my time trying to view it. Obviously the question of 34 years being given has even bypassed yourself. What a weird number? Why not round it up or down? I'm also aware he has taken off the time on remand 457 days?

Boo Hoo, what a horrific murder how she kept the decapitated body for two weeks before disposing of it, truly a twisted mind that needs Psychiatric help not prison.

I think some years ago some charity or campaign group said it wasn't fair to give them an endless sentence, they had to have an end point(something to look forwards to...lol). Kerr will put us right.
As for prisons getting full.........always 1 answer to that.

As for the Parole Board getting it right.........mmmmmmm?
