    Match Ratings v Oldham away

    Slocombe 5 - Why?
Nemane 8 - MOM Two very nice assists, our main source of danger all game long
Brindley 5 - Can we up the interest level a notch or two, please?
Baldwin 7 - Super-poised for 95% of the game. Still has a mistake in him, and could be more assertive with his forward runs.
Bajrami 5 - Clumsy moments let him down
Cameron 6 - No lack of effort, on the ball a tonne, but didn't use it all that well.
Palmer 7 - Industrious, neat and tidy as ever. Some killer balls too
Bostock 6 - OK for a league debut, but recycle, recycle, recycle..
    Rodrigues 5 - Played badly
Austin 6 - Beavered away, looked good on the ball for most of the first half
Langstaff 6 - He put us ahead and that should've won the game for us. So in short, he did his job.

    Subs
Scott 7 - Just scored a double, so naturally we bench him. Would've had another double if he'd been allowed more than 30mins
O'Brien 5 - Was brought on to see the game out, then could do nothing to help when we had to chase.
Castro 6 - Not on long, but that reverse ball to Cameron should've resulted in a goal.

Today needs to the final lesson in that regard, and it's already taken at least one error too many. Let Slocombe concentrate on keeping goal, and let the outfield players do the playing.

Then that would go a long way to us fundamentally changing our style. If Slocombe just hoofs it, we will lose possession so much more quickly. We are not equipped to deal with keepers hoofing the ball forward.
Todays **** up was nothing to do with what’s being asked of him. Todays **** up was all down to decision making and concentration. In that instance it’s get ball gone.

I think that's right. This mistake is far beyond what a goalkeeper playing this style is asked to do. Nervousness and anxiety clouding out good judgement, rather than him thinking he's Franco Baresi.

It wouldn't fundamentally change our style. With the system we play, we have at least six outfield options to play out from the back, so involving the goalkeeper (so frequently) is an unnecessary luxury not a necessity. Slocombe's mistakes are indeed down to decision-making and concentration, and therefore all the more reason not to ask him to do anything more than a goalkeeper actually needs to do. Every game, the more adventurous and involved he becomes, the more you can see it's a mistake waiting to happen. Mentally, he's caught between two roles, and one of them isn't his.

Not sure many , if any, would argue with AC's suggested MOTM from today.

    I'd agree with this assessment
I expected a change at half time maybe bostock off for chicksen with baj moving into midfield and cameron going back into the back 3
Ruben was poor today and should have made way for Scott earlier

Haven’t seen the goal but even the best GKs with their feet make mistakes throughout the season. I personally think on the whole he’s pretty good with his feet and especially with having to adapt to it.

Hard to judge from the away end, but he was 30ish yards out from his goal with opposition players in close vicinity. Whatever style we play, taking a touch under those circumstances was insane. We at least need a proper backup keeper on loan.

We lost all control of the game at the point, it became end to end and it could have gone either way. We should still have won, but we could easily have lost.

Strange team selection and weird substitutions. LW has had better afternoons this season.

No need for a for any change to how Slocombe plays, because if he was to stay in his area and just keep goal, we would have to change our style of play completely. It is the way we play Slocombe that enables us to keep a high line and to look for forward passes when having the ball at the back, as he is always an outlet pass. Slocombe was badly at fault today though, as soon as he was first to the ball, it should have had Row Z on it all day long.
