    On this day in 1979....

We drew 2-2 away at Coventry City in an FA Cup 3rd round tie.

I was at the match, as a 17 year old it was actually one of the first away matches I ever went to on my own.

I remember they gave us the whole open end behind the goal and it was like looking back at a packed Brummie Rd, terrific atmosphere on a cold winters night.

Biggest crowd I can personally remember at Highfield Road, over 38,000 there.

We thrashed them 4-0 in the replay and 7-1 ( brown away kit game ) and 3-1 in the league that season but this game was a very tight affair.

I’ll bet a few of you were there that night?

I was going but cried off late due to feeling unwell.
I went to the 1-3 win in the league there,David Mills debut, the 7-1 home game and the 4-0 cup replay.
We put 16 goals past them that season and before the 7-1 game pundits were saying it would be tight because Coventry were in form. We absolutely blitzed them, we also had a goal disallowed late on. Atkinson said which one is Custer?

What an incredible season that was and such a tragedy we didn't win anything. Before Christmas we were unstoppable, in December alone we won 2-1 at Highbury, 5-3 at Old Trafford, 3-0 at Molineux and 2-0 at home against Valencia. In January we beat Bristol City 3-1 on a snow-bound Hawthorns and went top of the league with a 1-1 draw at Carrow Road. Then it snowed and we didn't play for weeks. When we started playing again we were going for three trophies. We asked for an extension to get all our games in but we were denied. I remember one week we played on the Saturday, Monday, Thursday and following Saturday. At the end of the season we were out on our feet, too knackered to cross the finishing line and lost the last game 0-1 to Forest who pipped us for runners up.
If it hadn't been for the winter I reckon we would have won at least one trophy.

I well remember that last home match to Forest, such disappointment after a superb season.

After the snow our form fell apart though.

Remember that match! Were you not 37?

Horrible ground Highfield Road and surrounding streets were like the Old Baseball ground at Derby!
