According to the Debyshire Times we have until 5pm on the 23rd March to do any deals.

I love the stock excuses fans come up with for not giving young players a chance: "one for the future", "not the right time", "too much pressure", "needs another loan spell" etc. etc.

Brooks didn't look like the pressure was bothering him on Saturday. In fact, he looked like he was loving the experience. Very good body language and didn't seem at all afraid to command and communicate with the defenders in front of him. He was handling the occasion a lot better than "vastly experienced" Mark Howard was in Wrexham's goal at Maidenhead, put it that way!

A younger keeper can sink or swim. Fabien Speiss's career was probably destroyed by Shaun Derry. He was being watched by Man Utd because on the eve of the season we sold Bailkowski and he was just chucked in and not backed by Derry destroying his confidence. When Carroll was injured, instead of going to Speiss, Derry pulled Pilkington out of retirement.

I am all for giving Brooks his chance, but I would also be happy to ease him in and get in an experienced cover for Slocombe. Maybe share the keeping next season between Slocombe and Brooks but right now, we can't afford to make a mistake, both in the league and with another talented youth keeper

However crucial our upcoming games may be, no goalkeeper can be guaranteed not to make a mistake. Our senior keeper, Slocombe, has made a few mistakes this season, as is probably the case for most goalkeepers at this level.

Williams wouldn't have planned to play Brooks last Saturday until the late injury to Slocombe, but the fact is Tiernan came in and did very well, including saving a penalty. He would have had a clean sheet but for a very poor decision by the referee for the second penalty. On what grounds, therefore, is Brooks not deserving of a chance to continue as cover?

There's a fair chance that anyone we might bring in on loan will not have had much first-team football for some time, otherwise they wouldn't be available to join us. Brooks has now had experience up to and including the league below, so he's as prepared as he'll ever be to take the plunge. Of course it could go wrong, but as Wrexham showed, you could put a 37-year-old with over 200 appearances in goal and he could still make a mistake. You often find young players are more fearless than experienced pros, because they know there's no overwhelming expectation on them.

If LW feels he is good enough and has the temperament to deal with the occasion, he should play IMO.
The only game I’m worried about, and it really doesn’t matter who is in goal, is Wrexham. Can either command the box and deal with the physicality of our opponents? That’s all I care about.

Think of it another way the transfer deadline is March 23rd which is just over 2 weeks - Slocombe is going to be out for 3/4 weeks(hopefully) but quite often longer with these type of injuries
Brooks gets injured before Slocombe is fit obviously Mair is definitely not considered ready/good enough
So if we are going to sign a keeper we must get one who can definitely step straight in and might be the fine line

You can always loan a keeper even after deadline day in an emergency

But won't Archie Mair be judged to be our keeper?
