There is a bit about scattering enemies that refers to the gunpowder plot or the Scots. Depends which one you want to believe.

I'm with Billy Connolly. National anthem should be the theme tune to the Archers.
For people who prefer royalty not to be the head of state, president Margaret Thatcher has a ring to it.

Fortunately your a bit late for that , ding dong and all that .

We've enough quality songwriters or musicians to come up with a top national anthem , doesn't have to be something already out there .

Good idea , play the second verse too and even the most royalist lickspittle will be bored to tears soon enough .

Here's one that's based upon a familiar tune and follows a similar theme to the good ol' US of A's version.

Oh say can you see, by the dawn's early light,
Those White Cliffs that we scaled as our dinghies were sinking,
The red cross and white squares through the perilous night
O'er the headlands we watch'd were so gallantly streaming
And the searchlight's bright glare, F bombs filling the air,
Gave proof through the night that we almost were there.
Oh say does that Saint George's Cross yet wave,
O'er the land where it's free till you go to your grave.
