Put it through the books over 3 seasons. Sell players for 400k and put it through in one go and the result is nett zero.

Good point and it seems our strategy is not to create longer term liability but to take players on short-term contracts, potentially on higher salaries so our liability is managed season by season E.g. Morrison and Cafu

I can understand why the club take that strategy as it ensures better financial management over a longer term period
