Brad Collins to Coventry getting very close, as far as I understand. That would surely leave the Reds looking for another goalkeeper. Collins a very good servant to BFC over four years. #barnsleyfc

We are excited to announce that Luca Connell has signed a long-term contract extension at Oakwell.

The 22-year-old has put pen to paper on a four-year deal, with a further year option in the Club’s favour.

Winning our Young Player of the Season award in his first season with the Club, Connell made 48 appearances and contributed ten assists from the middle of the park during the 22/23 campaign.

The Republic of Ireland youth international netted twice during the previous season, two stunning volleys both on the travels for the Reds against Peterborough and Port Vale.

Barnsley FC CEO, Khaled El-Ahmad, discussed the extension: “We are pleased that Luca has chosen to continue his development at Oakwell.

    Our BIG SUMMER SIGNING.
    The word development inserted again.
Reckon a nice sell on clause included.

It's a bit of an insurance policy as far as the club is concerned .

It protects a saleable asset from financial depreciation due to a shorter contract .

It means nothing more than that .

Another club matches the club's valuation of Luca then he's gone .

Absolutely nothing to do with Luca's development , the club's valuation gets hit tomorrow morning then he's sold .

I for one am delighted at this extension , he his one of our better players & I think the deal is good for club, player & fans , he now has a contract for 4 years with the option of a 5th , fingers crossed he does a Mads & we get 4 years out of him before he goes onto bigger & better things & for those cynical of the deal I ask a simple question, what would you do with a rising talent , would you just let him run down his contract or would you try and get him to sign a deal that suits everyone, what would you do ?

As you say Shads the deal suits everyone.

You will know that signing a contract nowadays does not mean the player is committing himself to stay four/ five years.

Connell benefits from 1) The increase in wages from his present contract
    2) The feature of most new contracts--a release clause amount which means if a club matches that amount the club have to let him go. If that happened next week and Connell fancied going to the club he would be off.

Barnsley FC benefit by being in a stronger negotiating position regarding length of contract left, assuming the release clause amount is not met.

Given Connell's age (22) and ability I cannot see him being here anywhere near four/ five years in the prime of his football career and wage earning potential.

It's good that the Connell news has been released late in the day on a bad news day and wasn't left until Friday morning.

The Club Photographer can take some "signing shots"-----oh.

Seems a good deal for the club on the face of it but what happens if Luca doesn’t push on and he’s on the books for four years at high wages and you can’t move him out. There are two sides to everything and 4 years is a long contract so let’s hope it turns out well and if Luca does improve, which I think he will, he could be both a big asset whether playing or sold.

Collins completes medical at Coventry this afternoon (Friday)---the goalkeeper, not the new manager.

    Barnsley keen on Watters return
Barnsley are reportedly keen on getting Max Watters back next season.
Watters went on loan to the Tykes at the tail end of last season, having scored no goals for Cardiff despite being installed as the team's main striker by Steve Morison.
He fared far better in League One, though, netting four goals in 19 league appearances for the Reds.
