... for some decades there has been a semblance of control by the elected government of the day; largely believed by most of the public. This has been a useful cloak for the Establishment. The Establishment being the banks, the Treasury, the media, the Civil Service, and the large commercial organisations - all of whom dictate to the government of the day, behind closed doors, what will actually happen. If you have any doubts, sign up to the WEF forum and watch who attends Davos (and other venues) meetings. As we know power corrupts absolutely to the extent that The Establishment are failing to maintain their smokescreen, believing that they can get away with their methods of operation in open sight and no-one can stop them. So, people, mind you take care ...

I think more people are gradually becoming aware of this BH. Let's hope it's not too late and we can do something about it.

The irony is that the most effective dictating to the government of the day we've seen recently has been by... Nigel Farage.

There's no doubt that power isn't always transparent, but the WEF is just a talking shop and while rich corporations and individuals no doubt move public opinion with their pet spokespeople - just look how well the oil companies have done with climate change denial - governments in democracies can't forcibly lead their population. Quite often they have to follow.

Think this very strongly overestimates three things - the extent of control that the establishment actually has; the unity of purpose that the establishment actually has; and the degree of competence and organisation that the establishment actually has.

Och Pie, people were certainly forced to follow the government during covid, and not the other way round.

Pity the government didn't follow the government!

Much as I hate to agree with ideal spoonerism Matt Hancock, the UK public started restricting their movement before the government got round to imposing the first lockdown (which was nevertheless late).

Even so, surveys suggested the plurality supported most of the efforts, even into late 2021 - even if it stopped being a majority by late 2021. Had they not, I am not sure the Johnson government line would have held.

Och Pie sorry but that is utter garbage about the public restricting their movement before being told to by the government. I guess they were also using masks before being told to do so

An indoor hobby group I'm involved with certainly curtailed their activities before legally being required to so do. A dozen people meeting up in a smallish room space did not seem a good idea. Masks were an awkward situation as it is so alien for us to wear one so most were not wearing a mask beforehand.
