In my opinion the R and A are making the rules too easy. The biggest mistake the golfing authorities made was when they ended the rules that male golfers with a handicap of 4 or less no longer had to play 40% of their rounds in golf competitions on golf courses other than their home course to maintain their handicap.
As a result of this change in the rules low handicap golfers became ‘one course wonders’ as they only played in golf competitions on their home golf course resulting in them having a very low handicap.
Scratch golfers used to be rare in Scotland but now they are ten a penny.
All depends on the course difficulty.

Single figure at say Drumoig would be double figures at Downfield or Carnoustie by easily.

So are you saying someone who gets a hole in one at Drumoig would do well to get a birdie at a similar hole at Downfield or Carnoustie

It depends on the length and difficulty of the golf course. They used to say that if a person could play to their handicap on Campbeltown Golf Course they could play to their handicap on any other golf course.

I agree and I would take it a stage further.
When I left Downfield GC in December 2005 my handicap was 6.6 and when I stopped playing golf on Machrie Golf Course on Islay in February 2011 it had increased to 10.6.
Machrie Golf Course was far more difficult to play than Downfield Golf Course as there is no shelter on the golf course with the winds blowing off the Atlantic Ocean with the next stop being America.
It also did not help matters that the course had 13 blind holes and it was rumoured locally that Machrie Golf Course had been designed by Stevie Wonder.

    Golf doesn’t work like that.

Holes in one are more luck than skill that’s why they are rare.

Downfield is worse than calmac ferries, dreadful snooty place to boot. 😄 they are very much old school as they found out when their main men got pumped over the water.
