Even if nobody is going to change their mind, arguing online is a good way of testing out how robust your own argument is and to be better prepared for the push backs that you hadn't previously considered.

The best and most persuasive thinkers out there have been in situations (debating societies, paid speaking events, misguided youth) where they've had to argue and make the case for the opposition. When you find yourself surrounded by people refusing to allow anybody with an alternate opinion to be heard, then you know you're in very bad company that's going to lead you into a very dark place. Embarrassingly for me, this is only something I've realised in the last 3 years. It's taken the madness of what's gone down in the 2020s to slap me across the face with a reality check.
