My starting point is something else as yet undefined. I think it will be scientific rather than religious.

The thing is, different cultures and different religions have different gods. I think Hinduism has 33 gods. Do all these gods really exist? I think it all came about as a way of explaining things that weren't understood at the time, like an earthquake would be seen as god's fury against sinners. Nobody knew at the time it was due to the movement of tectonic plates under the earth's crust.

'Religion and Politics' are usually paired together as things you shouldn't talk about....pretty good advice, if you want to be sure of keeping your friends or your job

But the two part ways in situations like this - responses to interviews on social media, debates on forums etc

The key difference is politics is in the realm of the known - we have all the information we need to make our cases and attack those of others

Religious and spiritual beliefs though are the realm of the unknown. How anyone seeks to make sense of the great mysteries of existence has always been off limits to me. Of course some positions make more sense than others, but faced with those massive unanswered questions I think you always have to be respectful for whatever gets people through

This is why what LW said in his interview will resonate with most

Secondly, do you really think Luke gave a lecture on pure and godly footballers?
Thirdly, what was the fire he poured petrol onto and where is the evidence it caused a bigger fire?
I think that one of the characteristics of this board that makes it worth spending a few minutes on in a day is its 'bandwidth'. We have a very knowledgeable and, for the most part, articulate audience and it is within their compass to discuss all things football and countless subjects related to it. And why not?
If you don't like the ridiculous amounts of time given over to Strictly at a weekend, (for example) you are in control of the consul or even the off switch. The same applies here. For me, and several others (judging by the take-up) this fred has been quite intriguing and long may it rain (sic).
Hi and Thanks for your reply
My name is not Dougie & I assume, rightly or wrongly, your name is not Sidders.I apologise for my spelling, my excuse is fat fingers & thumbs on the phone keyboard.
Whilst I have my own view on things as does everyone else, including yourself, within the realms of being polite and reasonable.
I also presume that you are of an antagonistic nature, I could be wrong, but on recent posts I've looked at that seems to be the case, good for you if you get off on it.
Once again thank you for reading my take on this topic.

However I do feel a twang of discomfort when players sign themselves with a cross, kneel and kiss the grass, or dedicate a goal to their god though I assume it's more to do with thanksgiving for whatever their god has brought them rather than anything else.

I hover between atheist and agnostic. But Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy provided many answers for me
I agree, each to their own but I find the comments after every interview, from Bostock and Crowley slightly uncomfortable. Why they feel the need to do this, I don't get. It just reminds me of American evangelists and not something I want to hear in this country. It's a private thing

I am happy with our three players having a strong Christian belief, but feel slightly uncomfortable with their goal celebrations, (well Crowley and Bostock's) anyway 🤣

I think you're right, it does seem to be something of an american import. I've heard exactly the same words said by NBA players, Lebron himself often says it, or words to the effect. Here's an example I remembered - Bradley Beal

Often the context is receiving praise or plaudits and being uncomfortable with taking all the credit they thank Jesus/God. Maybe they feel they have to or should. Also, many players come from extremely difficult backgrounds and adversity and see everything as a blessing. Being a top professional sportsman must feel like a great blessing - so give thanks.
My thinking's a long way from theirs, but I'm used to hearing it and don't feel uncomfortable with it at all - it's an expression of genuinely held beliefs, humility and gratitude.

As John Bostock said in his interview, it's not just the cherry on the icing, it's what makes them what they are. I guess that if you don't know if for yourself, you will not understand why they want to do it.
