Coventry rumour has been going for a while. I think we’ll be lucky to get 2m for him. How many L2 strikers are sold for good money?
I think IF we get offered 2-3 million then we have to sell, that covers the whole squads wages for a year. I hope the owners don’t get too much grief if we do too, it’s not lack of ambition but total business sense. I would hope they reinvest a lot of it but shouldn’t be expected to invest it all, we have to remember they have invested their money with little return so far and especially through covid.
A really sensible and realistic post and it’s not really been since the Derek Pavis era that we have had such assets like Macauley Langstaff that we can sell to help the club be more sustainable. Or we get compensation for a manager/head coach.
It’s not going to be what some fans want to hear but like Luke Williams if we get people in for 18 months to 2 years and help them improve and they take the club up a level then it’s a win win situation for everyone.
It can have a snowball effect as other players and coaches will look up and take note and we will get a reputation of being a club that provides a platform for good up and coming players and coaches in which to grow and develop whilst keeping the club moving forward at the same time.
Ok so the club might not move up two divisions as quickly as Ian Burchnall, Ruben Rodrigues or now Luke Williams have but we do find ourselves a league higher. So it is a case of slowly building on this and go again except now it will be down to a new head coach and some existing and new players to look to take the club to league one. It may take more than one a season like it did getting out of the National League but the key is keeping that upwards trajectory and momentum going.
I think this is the key. Quick success is only sustainable if you have a lot cash behind it. Otherwise you need to build slowly and progress similarly.
Otherwise, the loss of ML etc is catastrophic.
Let’s have a quick look at the teams above us. Stockport are in their second season and are looking good for a shout of promotion. Mansfield have had Nigel Clough as manager for just over three years and have previously finished in the playoffs so this could be now be their year. Wrexham are Wrexham and have had money thrown into them and so should be where they are. Barrow have been a bit under the radar and have been in league two for nearly four seasons so have slowly progressed. Crewe are in their second season at this level having been relegated from league one so have stabilised and are pushing on.
So to be where we are in our first season back means we are in a good place. All to play for and to finish in the playoffs would be a good achievement regardless of if we were to progress in them or not. Even if we were to drop off and finish mid table with the injuries and loss of head coach it still gives the new head coach and the club time and a summer to build on this platform.
You can get over LW leaving because we could replace him with someone at least as good but to lose ML before Scott has recovered would be a disaster. I get that ML deserves his chance but please, not until the summer.
