There is truly nothing new under the sun.
Edward Jenner developed the first vaccine – for smallpox – in 1796 and published the results of his experiments in 1798.
By 1800, pamphlets were circulating that claimed that the Jenner vaccine contained ‘poison of adders, the blood, entrails and excretions of bats, toads and suckling whelps’ and that it caused recipients to ‘sprout horns, run around on all fours and squint like cows’.
Jenner responded in 1800 writing that ‘the feeble efforts of a few individuals to deprecate the new practice are sinking fast into contempt’.
Sadly, Twitter is the new pamphlet and Jenner’s hope that anti vax sentiment was sinking into contempt proved hopelessly optimistic.
I have no doubt that some of the authors of the pamphlets would have sincerely believed what they wrote as did the people who then circulated them
