His unorthodox substitution won us promotion at Wembley. Some people are hard to please.

That was not unexpected, as we all knew that was going to happen if the game went to penalties. As Slocombe had never saved a penalty.

To be fair, it's not really unorthodox at this point. Swapping your keeper for a penalty specialist was started by the Dutch at I think the 2014 world cup when they bought on Krul for the shootout. Happened quite regularly since

Hardly unorthodox, SP. Our goalie dived the wrong way and it was only his stuck-out boot that stopped a goal. One can't have thought that just because Slocombe has a bad record on penalties, subbing him was the thing to do, can one? We don't know the record of whatsisname stopping penalties anyway. What we do know is LW's habit of multiple substitutions is unsound and has nearly cost us games.

Well in the multiple decades I've been watching Notts, that's the only time I can remember where a single substitution changed the course of our history in such a way.

I know LW wasn't perfect, but some of the comments here are mind-blowing considering we're talking about a manager who brought success and happiness to the club after years of misery, and did so while being a thoroughly decent guy.

Why do these discussions always have to be so binary? It’s quite possible to think LW was a fantastic coach for us AND he certainly struggled to solve our defensive problems this season.

I can definitely see a scenario where he comes back in the not too distant future.

It's easy to let that last part take root, become the accepted wisdom, but I don't think it's fair. He was an attacking coach with an attacking philosophy - In just 16 months in the job, he took us from perennial NL play-off failures and left us in the L2 play-off positions. What more do people want? The rest is on recruitment. He was forced to try his cavalier methods in a higher league with Slocs, Brinds, Rawlo, Stone etc as all he had for a safety net.
