My partner's son tells me that West Ham are similar - the reason Moyes is delating signing an extension is apparently because, despite winning a trophy last season, there are a lot of calls for him to be sacked. They are still in Europe and not out of the chase for Europe in the league.

Of course, Maynard desperately needs a win or some kind of result asap to stop the fan base descending in even more chaos.

It's a football fan thing and I don't think anyone is completely immune, certainly not me in the few hours after a defeat. If we think we're bad, look at the fans who support the very biggest clubs. They have the least to complain about, but a couple of defeats and all hell breaks loose on social media.

Something strange happens to normally sensible adults when they become football fans. They suddenly become emotionally immature and act like petulant schoolchildren whenever they don't get what they want, and what they want is wins and great performances pretty much every week.

When they're getting what they want, they're all smiley and sweet and the owner/manager/players are all heroes, but when things are going wrong, the toys go out the pram in the most spectacular fashion and everyone's to blame.

It's good news for the football message board industry though!

Could be worse, could still be in the National League.

It's a bit more nuanced with Moyes.
He has refused to use any of the young players from their successful Academy
Moyes says players aren't ready until they're 21
Ridiculous really when Klopp, Pep and plenty of other PL managers are giving kids a chance

A number of people were saying that they wouldn't judge SM until after 10 games in charge. At 7 he's closing in on that now with 2 of the next 3 away, which might actually be helpful to him in the short term, he'll be under less pressure away. Fullarton didn't do too badly on the road, but his terrible home form finished him off after his 12th match in charge (his 5th at home).

After the first 7 league games in charge, managers this century......

    1. Steve Cotterill W5 D2 L0 Pts:17
    2. Keith Curle W5 D1 L1 Pts:16
    3. Luke Williams W4 D3 L0 Pts:15
    4. Gudjon Thordarson W4 D3 L0 Pts:15
    5. David Kevan (2) W4 D2 L1 Pts:14
    6. Steve Thompson W3 D3 L1 Pts:12
    7. Kevin Nolan W3 D2 L2 Pts:11
    8. Harry Kewell W3 D2 L2 Pts:11
    9. Chris Kiwomya W2 D4 L1 Pts:10
    10. Paul Ince W3 D1 L3 Pts:10
    11. Jocky Scott W3 D1 L3 Pts:10
    12. Craig Short W3 D1 L3 Pts:10
    13. Hans Backe W2 D3 L2 Pts:9
    14. Jamie Fullarton W3 D0 L4 Pts:9
    15. Shaun Derry W2 D2 L3 Pts:8
    16. John Sheridan W2 D2 L3 Pts:8
    17. Martin Allen W2 D2 L3 Pts:8
    18. Ricardo Moniz W2 D2 L3 Pts:8
    19. Mark Cooper W2 D2 L3 Pts:8
    20. Gary Mills W2 D1 L4 Pts:7
    21. Ian Burchnall W2 D1 L4 Pts:7
    22. Ian McParland W2 D1 L4 Pts:7
    23. Ian Richardson W2 D1 L4 Pts:7
    24. Neal Ardley W1 D2 L4 Pts:5
    25. Stuart Maynard W1 D1 L5 Pts:4
    26. Gary Brazil (2) W0 D3 L4 Pts:3
    27. Billy Dearden W1 D0 L6 Pts:3

Brazil and Dearden both drew their next game (8th in charge), so if Maynard loses on Saturday he will be joint bottom of this table.

What I take from that table is how deceptive and random such snapshots can be in judging a manager's eventual quality. Gudjon Thordarson and Steve Thompson in the top six! Sam Allardyce would have been at or very near the bottom if a slightly longer timeframe had been used.

'give him more time' 'get rid now' 'its the players arn't good enough' 'the slide started before the new manager'

all the old oft repeated views have merit

I'm not football savvy, nor wise on any matters: but.. I am old and seen a lot of life's mien.

This chap is the wrong man, at this club, at this time. The 'feel good factor, seldom comes, if ever. It's about to go.

We need calm heads right now, not emotional ones. Our current failings aren't down to one man. Yes, he might not be the right coach to lead us forward long term, but sacking him won't instantly solve the recruitment blunders and clear issues we have in the squad. It will cause more upheaval and instability, however. I'd give him more time. We're aren't going up or down this season, so there's no reason to rush into hasty decisions.
This is where I'm at. There needs to be an acceptance that last night was a culmination of problems that have manifested since we got back from Wembley and have led us to where we are currently at.

What we have to remember as well is SM is not the manager he is the head coach. He has a recruitment team, a management team, a coaching team and a squad of players. Under such a set up everyone has to take ownership and collective responsibility for the current situation. Likewise it will be down to everyone to turn it around.

Whether SM is the man who can lead and front the turnaround time will tell.

Sutton away on the opening day was a wake up call and warning that we would have problems with conceding goals this season. Sutton at home yesterday was confirmation that something has to be done in the next six months to stop us conceding so many goals and having a season of struggle next year. We simply cannot rely on outscoring the opposition at this level.

If Maynard jumps or if he were pushed, the following would still be true:
We have 4 keepers, probably the best of which is on loan
Brindley & Cameron are terrified of contact
Rawlo - knows what to do but can't do it
Baldwin - is as thick as mince
Nemane is a winger who can't cross

    We rely on:
    Jones crosses
    McGoldricks nouse
    Macca's finishing
    Crowley's imagination
    JOB's enthusiasm

Everyone else - just plodding along
