The elephant in the room is his lack of leadership qualities. It might be possible to negate that with a team of L2 Galacticos.
It does look like a topsy-turvy set up on paper, now that we've got L2 quality and experience on the field but not off it. It might loosely be akin to the McP situation during Munto where it ultimately needed Cotterill to come in to get a talented squad playing to their full potential. McP wasn't doing badly but it wasn't convincing in terms of looking assured for top 3.
The bar will be a bit lower than 2010 as the owners will probably accept play offs, but this team won't be as good as the Munto one. Some might argue it is, but how many of those people would be prepared to bet a large sum at this stage on Maynard overseeing a title winning promotion? We'd all take 3rd of course, but the point is that this squad is unlikely to steamroll their way to promotion and will need sound guidance to navigate the humps that a promotion challenge entails.
True. Having a decent squad and getting recruitment right is just one factor. The teams that go on to get promotion have a winning mentality instilled in them from the manager. I think Maynard is probably a decent coach, but I'm not sure he's a born leader. Time will tell.
That’s exactly my fear. I don’t give a monkeys he’s not managed in the league or was a BT engineer and I said that at the start as long as he had leadership qualities. There’s plenty of managers with EFL experience that aren’t really that good leaders or coaches but somehow manage to land jobs till they’re eventually found out.
