Basically what we have done with Mahovo when he was released at 16(?). Now sold on hopefully for a nice figure and potential addons.

This is the way lower league teams can make youth pay off. You might even get a gem that can play half a season before being sold.

The frustration is when we release young players only for them to make their way higher up the pyramid then we are.

In my opinion it was and if he had a decent GK coach at the time he would have progressed.

It would certainly be nice to see more of our own academy products making the first team squad and, eventually, becoming regular starters, but after the massive impact of losing our league status I think it will take a while for the academy to truly bear fruit. I do, however, think they're doing a great job of bringing things back to full potential as quickly as possible. It will take time and money.
