Your probably on the money with that. IFA wanted him, but wasn't interested. Maybe he already knew what was going to happen after the tournament if Southgate won or lost.

I would prefer Klopp. International management seems like semi retirement position really

    Did he fail though ?

I mean the owner is going round making tons of signings left right and centre just as Tuchel/Poch found out too.

National managers dont tend to be the very best either

Who can blame Southgate with the disgusting behaviour of the press and some fans- I will go as far as saying until this attityde changes Engalnd will never win anything- about time we all got behind Engalnd through good and bad

Thanks Southgate for agreat 8 years, I backed and was with you all the way through - i felt you could have gone all the way- so close just 4 mins to the end. How a spanish player is allowed to run 60 yards unmarked to cross for Spains winning goal, is beyond me, and criminal defending, and in the end sunk Engalnd annd Southgate
As i said on another post no successfull club manager will take the risk, to be classed as a success or be better than Southgate they have to win the world cup- a tall order as Engalnd dont win trophies. I rememeber Scolari saying he wouldnt touch Engalnd with a 10 foot pole- due to the hostality of the press and fans

Thanks Southgate, i was absolutely gutted that it went of the rails right at the end - but thankyou and all the best for giving us all hope agian

    Good point.

Good though Pep and Klippety are/were you can't buy Englishness. I get the impression (could be wrong) that Pep needs the players for a long time which he wouldn't get at international level, and Klopp is a builder of spirit, sometimes of the 'us against the rest' type, which I'm not sure he'd have time to do.

Where GS was good was in building that spirit, but he failed tactically to out-think the best opponents and I'm a little concerned that there is an unhealthy tension (as opposed to a constructive one) within the group, possibly caused by the younger players chomping at the bit and not given a fireproof reason why some of the older pros on the wane are preferred.

Potter is an interesting shout. He really had no chance at Chelsea but he didn't do himself many favours - it is still possible to play a bad hand well, which he failed to do.

Poch seemed to be turning things around at Chelsea. Strangely he was probably given too long to do so but then fired when it looked like he'd managed it.

On balance I'd probably go for Howe as long as he left the embarrassing time wasting tactics behind at Newcastle. There's a difference between taking the heat out of the game and making your fan base feel just a little bit ashamed of how you've done it.

Southgate is an honest, decent hard working man
I'd like to think I'm half as good a man as he is
