Undoubtedly, Southgate goes down as England’s second most successful manager after Sir Alf Ramsey.

He picked up the job when the National Team were a proper **** show. Players didn’t look engaged with it, the fans certainly weren’t and the press vilified them all.

I saw a quote saying GS is like the ‘PM of the England Team’ which is so right. Being England manager is so much more than just the football. He’s been the spokesperson for so many social, cultural and economic touch points along the way and basically gets everything correct.

Fans are back in love with the Team. Two finals, one semi and one quarter is a fine, fine record across 8 years.

I don’t think GS lacks tactically, I actually think he’s a very good tactician. I think he simply is more averse to a more pragmatic and ‘defensive’ set up when it comes down to it. It’s his style and to a big extent, it’s worked. I can 100% see why he’s resigned, but it would’ve been nice to see him stay and maybe add to his back room staff. Add a voice or two who could unlock that little bit more.

As for who takes it on, good luck. I don’t think Klopp would fit the International scene. I also don’t think Howe will budge. I can see it being Carsley or Potter.

Imagine Graham Potter unveiling his assistant. Enter stage right… Ian Burchnall.

In fact other nations specifically germany think its Karma for Engalnds unjustified win in 66 - other nations love Engalnds entitled arragance then laugh when the fans and press throw their toys out of the pram when they lose yet again
Its the toxity of some Engalnds fans and press - for me it makes no difference who the new Engalnds manager is, it will be the same old rip them to shreds- when will they ever learn and actually get behind their team

And it was given, and if it hadn't it was 3-2.

England arrogant? Sick of hearing that tripe. We aren't arrogant, we go into a tournament expecting to leave early not win the thing.

Thank goodness Southgate has gone !
I haven't watched England for four yearssince the turgid , dismal performances and failure in the last European finals under Southgate.
Totally out of his depth as a football manager and more like a woke appeasing politician , which isn't his job.
As for England not winning the World Cup because of a debatable Geoff Hurst goal the argument against is invalid because goal line technology and VAR didn't exist. As the Laws of the Game were written at the time, " if in the opinion of the referee (and linesmen etc ) the goal was correctly given.
Criticism by media has always been rife and Graham Taylor was indeed the most vilified victim of the press and Sir Alf endured his fair share too.

Pretty much my sentiments. It's been a bit like asking a taxi driver to drive a Formula One car. Elite players need an elite manager to bring the best out of them, and Southgate was never that. People will point to his tournament record but I don't think I'm alone in thinking that's a tribute to the current generation of players who were still able to produce magic moments despite the manager's tactics, rather than because of them.

Of course, if we appoint an elite manager like a Klopp and we don't win something, Southgate could reasonably claim in hindsight that he was better than he got credit for, but I certainly won't miss watching the way his teams played. It was scarcely believable that you could take that array of talent and make them look so dull.

I don’t think you need to be an elite manager at International football and my reasoning is none of them go into international football.

Did anyone know who the Spain manager was before these Euros ?

Klopp won’t take the job in a million years and nor should he after all the sh*t our media gave him if I was him I’d chill in Marjorca like he is doing.

The smart money is likely to be on Carsley.

So what exciting and rewarding England team did you watch before those four years?
