Have the red necks & Ipswich got wafer thin squads. We were told that a promotion push is on the cards this season. You have your squad ready for the start of the season. Might have been last season when RM said something about wanting a settled squad before the season starts, having everybody through the door
When you have a proven top contributor, you can't casually assume that the contribution is replaceable, even for the same fee - as others have said, transfers, recruitment in general, is always a risk.
For me, our main asset is the extra 000s of new fans we've attracted to the ground - a bean counting approach, of selling whenever there's a profit is going to jeopardise our playing level and our support. We have already gambled with the appointment of the new Management Team. And this season's team are still strangers to each other. We know that margins are tight in L2, because all 24 teams are around and about the same level. Slip, and you'll likely slip into a relegation battle.
It's very easy to say, we are Notts County, we move on. We also move up and move down, more than any other club, and the moving down includes into non-league. For me, enough is enough, JJ and DC need to stay. Creativity is the hardest quality to replace of them all.

Good point - but I’m sure the club would have wanted that as well. I think what’s clear is that the club prioritized the most glaring problems - goalkeeper and defence, which were obviously essential to fix.
Assuming Crowley stays, I think any signings now are about squad depth rather than first choice for the starting XI.
You are right that we need to see what we have in September.
However the word “hope” keeps coming up time and time again. The need for “hope” can be much reduced by proper planning and not running so close to the wire.
We are now in a position where Dan Crowley’s head may have been turned by an offer from one of our promotion rivals. Even if he doesn’t go it is very destabilising for Notts. Win win for MK Dons.
I can’t get that image out of my head last season where he was cupping his ears at the Notts’ fans. He wasn’t happy that day.
It’s an interesting debate and like everything for me it’s about balance.
When we were in the national league we had Rodrigues and Wootton. As their contracts were coming to the last season people were wondering if the club was going to sell them or if they were going to see out their contracts. Wootton stayed saw his out his contract and moved to Stockport a league higher. The same happened with Ruben he stayed for his final year we got promoted and he moved up two levels. The hypothetical question can be asked is if we had sold Ruben in the summer of 2022 would we have got promotion to league two? The simple answer is no as he would not have scored a ***** goal at Wembley. The long answer is there are thousands of variables over a season and if we had brought someone else in what would their impact have been?
Fast forward two years and here we are again but this time with two midfielders in JJ and Dan Crowley but unlike Wootton and Rodrigues it’s not a years difference between two key players leaving it’s at the same time. Also we have lost one key player in Macca as well and also Nemame. Also the season has already started whereas with Rodrigues and Wootton they had left at the end of the season previously.
For me to not have Crowley and JJ playing for the club beyond 1st September would be a catastrophe in purely football sense for me on the face of it. The only saving grace would be is if there are two players already at the club that we don’t know about who by the end of the season we will class them as attacking and creative gems? Now it may turn out the new goalkeeper or a new defender could become star players. In which case one area of the squad becomes stronger than last season but the other becomes weaker. So then it’s whether the sum of the parts makes the team better or worse than last season. Also would the club bring in some players who were as good as JJ and Crowley for little if anything before the end of the transfer window?.
Because we have lost Macca both should stay and see out their contracts for me as they give us the best chance of finishing as high as possible this season and it’s less turnover of key players. The counter argument with that is it could be argued it’s kicking the can down the road as next summer both will likely leave but like with Rodrigues if both stay and the club gets promoted to league one both could then move up two levels to the championship. For me that’s the ideal world scenario. If they both stay and we do not get promoted we will likely lose them both for nothing which is the worse case scenario both on and off the field as they need to be replaced and the club hasn’t benefited financially. However the 6,000 season ticket holders would have seen them both play for a year and morale amongst the fan base would be better than if we lose both now.
It’s a dilemma for the club, a good one and shows recruitment has been good, but it’s wise and sensible to consider the impacts of potentially losing four key players Macca, JJ, Nemane and Crowley all in one transfer window and what impact that has on the team and the morale of the fan base. Crawley Town have experienced losing key players following their promotion to league one.
I thought I was a pessimist until I read this thread.
