I remember a drive, not so long ago, from Southsea to Brighton, it took hours, the traffic congestion was awful.
Not surprised as the road frequently changes from 3 lanes to single lane meaning traffic just rushes into jams. Chichester, Arundel and Worthing on that route all very badly served. M2 M3 M23 M27 all examples of motorways in the south that only go 'part of the way'
You are comparing apples and pears. Not surprising the north looks so much nicer if it's Inner London v a nice part of Yorks. What would be your honest answer if the choice was Hull (quote;who the f uck wants to live there) v where I am?

Whilst I'm asking questions of you can you answer 'Why if the north is so attractive are there hundreds of thousands of northerners down here in the south?' I can only think of 1 person I know around here of our generation who was born south of London!
People living in the south east (excluding London) are more intelligent than those living in the north. Not for 1 minute do I think people born in the south are more intelligent than those born in the north. But could it be intelligent northerners chose to migrate south.

That's going east doesn't get any better if you go west towards Bournemouth. Population of 3+ million along a 100 long mile coastal corridor of which 25 miles is Mway. You wouldn't be able to hear yourself speak for northerners whinging if it was the same up there.
I think we've dispelled the myth London is the south and money cascades from there to here.
I was referring to London the capital where I worked for many years. You are correct there’s some beautiful suburbs around London - I bought my first property in Kew before moving to Teddington then Reigate. All beautiful places. I just hated commuting into London and coming across dodgy individuals and it was scary with 9/11 then going on the tubes.
Still say though - the quality of life is better up north for a like for like nice area - property prices more sensible and people in general much nicer. Personally - I would never go back but do enjoy the odd weekend to see West End Shows. Lots of professionals in Harrogate have moved up from London with hybrid working as it’s more of a relaxed lifestyle.
