Teams (Notts included) hog possession but fear losing the ball because it means they'll normally get scored on, so they won't play players who have flair for fear of losing possession and then losing the game. They should be questioning why they aren't miles ahead in the first place with all the possession
‘Making the possession count’ is the perfect line here. Objectively, it makes more sense to have the ball as often as possible which is why possession, generally, is considered king.

Thursday night, although a tiny sample size, was a real example of Notts really making their possession count by both maintaining possession and actually allowing our two most creative players to play with enormous freedom. If SM can strike a balance of building a solid base that allows JJ and DC to shine, then sign me up.

There’s also definitely a fine line between ‘not wanting to lose the ball’ and ‘being patient and waiting for an opening.’ That line probably gets crossed quite fluidly from a fans POV depending on the trend of results.

Possession became a bit of a millstone around our necks last season and at times became a negative. The Newport game and Thursdays game are examples of how possession with an attacking emphasis should be used. All this passing around the corners, back to the keeper, across the middle with the sole intent of retaining possession is not hard to counter and I am glad that, as far as I can see, SM is looking for a quicker forward ball to players who aren't shackled by being in the right place to simply retain possession.

I thought the first half against Fleetwood was like Ardleyball where, although we were dominating possession, we didn't look like scoring and the feeling was that we could concede a silly goal if Fleetwood got a chance, which is what happened.

Thursday against Grimsby was totally different. We still dominated possession but the passing was crisper, faster and the clear intent was to move the ball into the opposition's half as soon as we could, not keep possession for the sake of it with no forward momentum. If we play with formation and the intent we did on Thursday in most/all games this season, a lot of teams in this league won't be able to cope with us. It set the bar for the way we should aim to play all the time. Plus we look a much bigger, more physically aggressive team this season too. More robust in winning the ball back, and more difficult to knock off it.

    I think you're right
Having Jatta makes a difference as he is big, physical and holds the ball up surprisingly well to bring others into play

Leicester’s title win was a welcome anomaly as was Lincoln’s win to a lesser extent. Look at Pep’s Man City team, Ferguson’s United, Wenger’s Arsenal they all dominated possession etc

In general and unsurprisingly the team with more possession wins more than it loses. I am happy that we have the ball more than the opposition, more entertaining having it

A lot depends on what the opposition do, though. Fleetwood sat really deep and didn’t press us at all, so it’s much harder to play forward as quickly because there’s no space. Grimsby committed some men forward and had a bit of a go.

Swan reported to be off to MK Dons with a fee of £200,000 mentioned.

I wouldn't touch him with a bargepole at that price.

Very important aspect that not a lot pick up on, how we play is very much a result of how the opposition set up. Team’s who sit deep cause problems for even the best possession teams.

I think I would be happy if we signed a young, quick forward with potential for the future rather than an experienced pro who would expect to be in the starting 11 every week. Use the season to bring him on, regular sub appearances, occasional starter when rotation is required. I sense that the spirit in the camp is really good so we don't want a "big personality" type especially given the on-field leadership we now have.
