For my part, couldn't give a flying. Did the team play good, entertaining football? All that matters.

After having said that, there are a few decent anthems in amongst all the dire stuff.
    I'd go for:
    Italy - "Fratelli d'Italia"
    Japan - "Kimigayo" - short & sweet
Israel - actually a very old general European tune
    also:
    France - "the Marseillaise"
The old imperial anthem - "God save the Tsar!"
    {As immortalised in the 1812 Overture which is doubly anachronistic. Ah, well.}

I appreciate this is all old hat,
but why do we have that awful dirge "God Save the King/Queen" anyway. That's the UK national anthem, Shirley?
Why don't we use "Jerusalem" for England? It's light years better.

I look at it in the way of a country call up it should be total commitment to King/Queen of your country which would include singing the National anthem and taking part of any paraphernalia that the country deems fit either through tradition or otherwise. Of course not everyone agrees with this but i feel it should be a kind of unwritten rule.
In these tmes that we are in at the moment it feels that GB is in the last bastions of having all its history and tradition wiped out by a minority, so i think its important to hold on to what we are allowed to hold on to.

    Very true !
I was once on holiday in N.Wales and went to watch Conwy Borough v Caersws.
In the market place in Conwy there was a small gathering of Welsh Nationalists which concluded with an older chap singing the Welsh Anthem
My Hen Fy Nhadau and yes the hairs did literally feel like they were standing !
I shook hands with the guy and told him so before asking directions to the football ground. Fortunately I arrived at the match and not the railway station down the road lol.
The dire dirge played before Engand internationals, is quite nauseating and the only redeeming feature is historical and traditional memories for a different era.

Think I'd choose 'I vow to the my country' if we were picking another. Strictly for the tune, not behind religious or a monarchist.

As an addition to this topic IF we had a present government that was as progressive and multicultural as they tell us they are, they should hold a referendum on whether we want our current national anthem or a choice of lets say 6/7 others, let us have it voted for which would give all our our muticultural voters their say, dont think Mr Starmer has the bottle or nous to conduct it though.

They aren’t. They’d be too scared of alienating the right of centre element who are key to getting them elected.
And to be honest, in the list of 100 things they need to concentrate on, this isn’t in the top 1000.

This is a non story. Whipped up into something by the press who need an angle to tear someone down. Anyone will do.

Who really cares? Was it an issue when capello was in charge? No. So who gives a fudge really. Riots, inflation, heating costs, unemployment, interest rates, economic growth, welfare cuts, crime, which of those would anyone out this before as something for the government?

That concept went well with Brexit, LOL.

My only concern is that one of the big achievements of Southgate was to get rid of the toxic atmosphere between the England Team and the fans (or at least some segments of them). I could see how this could be used to stoke those old fires

But what if like me you don’t have any commitment to king or queen? Do you have to sing along and pretend that you do? I would like to see the royal family consigned to the realms of history. By all means keep the royal palaces open as a tourist attraction, because they are part of our heritage, but I can’t justify being forced to pay for their pampered lifestyles.
