Some millionaires don’t!
Our mortgage was £30k in 1990 ,can any tell me how a couple can be given and spend over £70 on clothes and glasses in a few days .
I suppose my question should have been more along the lines of…..
If you were the Prime Minister would you accept free gifts from anyone running into the tens of thousands of Pounds?
On Radio 5Live this morning someone from the Labour Party was supporting him and Nicky Campbell was all over his saying that if this had been a Tory Leader he’d have been on the airwaves screaming “sleaze” and “typical Tory behaviour”.
The bloke replied that Sunak didn’t need to accept freebies as he’s a billionaire to which Campbell cleverly retorted, “but it’s okay for a millionaire” to accept these gifts then!?
I personally just don’t get it, I think it shows an alarming lack of basic nous and common sense to be accepting this stuff from anyone at all.
The Tories were just as bad and much worse when you consider the PPE scandal but really, Starmer, how can he pontificate in the way that he did about them and then do this himself, it beggars belief!?
Why does anyone need £2000+ glasses, you can get perfectly good prescription glasses for £400 to £500 and probably for less?
Whatever people might say about his contduct not being illegal, it’s morally bankrupt.
He also failed to declare the freebies his wife was walking around in and only did it after this was clearly going to be an issue.
I guess it’ll all be forgotten by the next election but it shouldn’t be.
Keir “New Gear” Starmer I heard him called today!
😂😂😂
All the same Mick. Labour we’re throwing dust up in the air with the Tories and the Rwanda plan but now he’s all for sending them to Albania. That’s ok of course because it’s their idea. All of them play politics and change to suit themselves. No such thing as a good Givernment yet people still vote for them incredulously.
This is what disgusts me and the plonker that this moron is.
It’s almost cringe how vain this guy is ‘designer primeminster’. The cheek of him to have been all over it with Boris or whoever it was claiming for their wallpaper few years ago.. didn’t Kier make mockery of this by posing for a photo with some m&s wallpaper?
These donation, dodgy think tanks and lobbyists need to stop. Governments should be free from any influence, full stop. I really hope he gets a vote of no confidence, it’s heading that way.
Great post Regis.
I know I have a dig at 123 about the “Metropolitan Elite”, you know, the “Fulham Set”, the “Champagne Socialists” etc but do you not agree that this is a big oart of the problem with Labour?
You get your hard working, salt of the earth MP representing Burnley or Redcar for example, he or she would 99% of the time recoil at the offer of any freebie or an invite to some dodgy event and then you get the likes of Starmer.
I look at people like him and Emily Thornberry and Rachel Reeves and get the impression that not only do they despise Tories, they actually look at their own poorer classes of voter with disgust.
Useful fools at election time and that’s about it.
Then they spend their days mixing amongst their own “sort” if you get my drift?
Maybe I’m wrong, just for clarity, I’m not claiming to be an expert on this.
I used to work as a very senior contracts manager and if you accepted anything other than a Xmas card and didn’t declare it - you were sacked on the spot with security marching you out of the building,
Starmer and the wife truly sicken me and to think this p rick is so hypocritical!
Yep totally agree there are some who are like that, but I don’t think it’s all of them. The likes of Burnham no. I think donations just need to be stopped. With that said, does something similar or opposite exist with the Tories? They could well act as if they are for the working class.
I didn’t vote this time, but i’ll give Starmer a chance, but it’s not all looking well for him.
I’d actually forgotten about that AL, I’ve worked in organisations where the same rule applied.
In the reverse, in my industry of sports it’s absolutely rife.
I sent two of my top customers to the Champions League Final in Barcelona when Man U beat Bayern in 2000 on a full package including the overnight hotel.
I also sent two Liverpool fan customers to the EUFA Cup Final when they drew 5-5 with Alaves and won on pens.
These were thank you’s for some fabulous business support from all four guys but it ain’t half funny how strong the support from them continued to be.
The one turned out to be a very good “investment “, a couple of years later his company went bust but he sent me the last cheque to clear before he went under and that saved me £48k.
I doubt that if I’d not looked after him that he’d have looked after me like that.
In reality, it shouldn’t be allowed but I’m not an expert on the subject.
Politics takes money so course all parties take donations which inevitably enables varying degrees of influence. Various Unions give financial support to the Labour Party (I'm not 100% sure, but I think that legislation is now in place so that individual members can decide whether or not their Union fees can be used for this purpose) whilst various business owners donate to the Conservative Party (don't think their employees have a say). This has always been the case and I'm sure no surprise to anyone on here. Taking gifts as an individual politician however-particularly a PM-is another thing entirely and opens up that person to all kinds of allegations.
Regardless of whether he followed the rules on this or not, Starmer has at best done something foolhardy in opening himself up to such criticisms, at worst he has behaved hypocritically. Didn't expect him to do something like this tbh, disappointed in him.
