Mark Robinson's thorts:
BURTON Albion Head Coach Mark Robinson believes his side need to start learning a little bit quicker after losing 2-1 to Notts County.
Despite Ben Whitfield's late goal and a strong push for an equaliser in the final few minutes, Notts County held on to hand the Brewers defeat in their second group game of Southern Group F in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy.
Reflecting on the game, Robbo said: "We looked like a team that made ten changes. Not with the football but just some of the things that I saw off the ball. You're looking at who's going to dislodge other people out of the team, and I think I need to look back on things. Some of the football was okay but to win football matches it's not just about how you pass the ball and what you do, there's other things that matter and maybe I've got to start emphasising that a little bit more."
"We'll have more bodies coming back within the next couple of weeks so you want that competition, but you just want to see certain things that it takes to win football matches. There's still so much that's good but when we talk about building a style it's not just on the ball, it's off the ball and things just have to start to happen. We're a new group and we've only been together for twelve weeks but the learning has got to happen a little bit quicker."
"In the last twenty, twenty-five minutes we're camped in their half, but for the bulk of the game when you can win the game and it really matters there's just a few things that just need to happen in terms of personality and seeing things through. We give them plenty of chance to get on the ball and be creative, but off the ball you have to do things sometimes over and over again to get a result."
On Romelle Donovan in his first start: "He had some really good moments. We've got to educate him really quickly on the key things that are important at this level in League One to make sure that we can play him because he's a really talented lad. It's my job to make sure that he's ready for all of the other parts of the game because he's a talented boy and he's got to be clever."
On the importance of work rate: "You won't find a successful team that don't work hard without the ball. I'm not saying we're not good off the ball but there's certain things that you have to do to help turn those draws into wins and those losses into draws."
On Alex Bannon's debut and giving him the armband: "From what I've seen in training, the way he carries himself and the way he talks is way above his years, so it just seemed right based off what I've seen from him."
On forcing a change of fortune: "Everyone's telling me that we do a lot of good things and that the wins will come but you have to make things come, we haven't had the rub of the green but we've got to make sure that we turn things ourself now and get across the line, whatever it takes."
On the goals conceded tonight: "It's a great finish for the first goal but I could have told you after five minutes that the lads right-footed, there's just little things like that where we've got to try and get into them, but the lads also have to take responsibility for that. I'm never going to be a screamer and a shouter but I've got to make sure that sort of learning is happening a little bit quicker because it's costing us."
"You've got to work good quality chances and again we did, but we've got to start being more proactive because so many goals at this level are scored from that second phase where you put good quality in and then pick up on that second phase. There's lots of little things but it is only little detail that we've really got to start digging into now."
Possibly the lowest Notts have ever played in front of in a competitive match if it was close to the gate for their earlier match in this group against Leicester Academy (473).
Lowest gate we've played in front of before last night is either away to Sunderland Academy in the FL Trophy 2016 (633) or away to Dover in tier 5 in 2022 who never gave an official figure but it was said to be "600 odd", so I'd take that to mean 650 max but maybe as low as 550.
Edit: Watford away in the 3rd division South Cup in 1937 is listed as 500.
May have been wearing my rose tinted specs but I thought I read that there was 600 Notts fans there which, if true, is remarkable. Irrespective, the interaction between players, management team and fans at the end was wonderful to see.
Speaking of rose tinted specs whoever wrote the Burton match report must have been high on cocaine. Notts were v good for a makeshift team for the first 70 minutes and deserved their 2-0 lead. Burton piled on the pressure for the last 20 minutes as Notts tired, but the great thing was that Notts held out to take a merited win. At the start of the game, once I saw the make up of the side, I thought Notts were going to struggle, but I warmed to their efforts as they all gave of their best. Yes they made mistakes but if the so called reserve players continue with the level of effort and commendable type of football played last night, the club is, and will remain, in a good place.
