I'd opted out because:
1) It's a futile stand-off where 'better' options will be batted away, and
2) If the best reason to keep a manager is because he's less sh1t than other options, the wrong discussions are being had.

Ok then - don’t opt out. Give me one of your “better” options and I will consider it. Or haven’t you got one?
