Jimmy spencer, was never the same player after a full season out
Michael O'Connor missed about a year during Nolan's tenure. He returned briefly at the end of the playoffs season, then signed for Lincoln as they stormed to promotion. We definitely missed him, but at the same time, perhaps we wouldn't have signed Yates on loan from Forest if he'd been fit.
John Bostock was another one, he wasn't the same player when he came back.
So player injuries that we can think of that negatively impacted a league campaign was probably what I was trying to imply, definitely some good shouts on the thread.
Definitely:
Matt Palmer
Jimmy Spencer
Gary Liddle
Don O’Riordan
Maybe:
Ady Thorpe?
Michael O’Connor ?
Rob Matthews ?
John Bostock?
Any others to add to the ‘definitely’ list, that had an impact on league form.
David Needham 1971/72, top of the 3rd tier when he played his last game before injury in game 22, down to 4th when he came back for game 36 and we ultimately missed out.
We've mentioned a few who were never the same after coming back from injury. We've no idea how much better a player Duane Darby might have been for Notts as he broke his leg pre-season after signing, and it was up front we had problems in 1998/99 struggling to avoid a drop straight back down again before Stallard, Beadle and Rapley were signed deep into the campaign.
JJ out until the new year according to Notts.
Didn't John Thompson not play again after that striker at Mansfield pushed him into the dugout and caused his head injury
John Thompson was injured at Ilkeston in a pre season friendly. A charge in the back ,adjacent to the touchline , ended in him being propelled into contact with the frame of the dugout causing serious facial lacerations. The sound of the impact was audible on the other side of the pitch. Fans were fearing a broken neck or skull fracture.
Many stitches were needed and according to various reports were between 40 & 70 !
JT did play again but not many times , with PTSD , being a definite factor.
I met him in the course of my work and he told me he was undertaking a physiotherapy degree with funding from the PFA.
He also apparently, received compensation in an out of court settlement for his injuries.
