Crowley playing deep fails on two levels.

Firstly, you want someone with his talent as close to the opponent's goal as possible, exactly where opponents don't want him.

Secondly, as you say, the time he has on the ball when playing deep brings out the 'show pony' in him, and he starts playing more for himself than the team.

If Maynard doesn't get his head around this it will come back to bite him in the long run.
