Whilst acknowledging that a footballer's playing career is significantly shorter than most of us in our preferred roles, it is no less important to be active and happy (until such time as they decide to retire). Of course the money matters but bad decisions leading to being marginalised and miserable can domino into other aspects of every day, and family life.

Edit - just seen the post re Macca being miserable. This is such a shame for a talented player and decent man. I hope his agent is suitable ashamed but I doubt it. How many players genuinely represent their players' (long-term) careers and well-being ahead of the immediate buck.
A footballers career is short for most. But the way some folk go on, you'd think they would never get a job outside football when their careers end. It's welcome to the real world when it ends.
