The No.10 conundrum was a position Farke wanted over summer & one he did not get & it shows every 90 mins we play, incuding yesterday when 1 nil up, imo

CEO Angus Kinnear singled out that particular failure as the only real blot on an otherwise satisfactory summer window & links have not gone away in the months since.

If we have no attacking threat, why do teams sit so deep against us, even playing away ?

Somebody must think we are a threat but they also know we are predictable in how we get into the goal-mouth with our defenders in tandem. We need a better midfield option quicky to provide more direct forward passing options without the need to over load on every attack we make, imo.

Emi Buendia at Villa is the biz, missed out on him last summer - a game changer, not cheap (cira 20m) but apparently of interest again.👍

Did well for Farke & was the Norwich ball supplier for Pukkis mazy runs with pin point passes aimed between the oppos central defenders & full-backs channels to chase onto.

A beautifully balanced player with sublime passing skills all over the pitch & also has that calmness we lack at times currently, imo.
His main strength is his positional intelligence which again is of enormous benefit for the team as he operates as that free extra man who tucks into half-spaces to create attacking 'central' overloads which we just cannot accomodate currently from within our squad personnel.

Farkes systems afford his creative players the licence to rotate positionally, which was the case at Norwich - which suits Buendia as he often drops deep to carry the ball forward with controlled dribbling & is adept to playing early penetrative passes capable of breaking the oppositions defensive lines.

We desperatelty need a Buendia player type who is adept at pulling defenders out of their positions to complement our free running stretching of defences who often sit deep.
This is the calibre of player we need to aim for !
Should be knocking on the Villa door for a deal to loan now buy later, imo, as the player needs real game time & we need that elusive 10 !
But we do have attacking threat don?t we? From the wingers and attacking defenders. If you?re a defender you?re gonna want to sit deeper against the pace we have. Albeit the crosses/passes are not always up to par.
I thought Rothwell corners were mainly pants. Either too low or punted to high and hanging which are no good to attack.

    Mt, question?

Is distribution a problem for us now? Most teams park the bus against us and it's very difficult to get a ball through 11 players sitting back. Not sure even someone as good as Buendia can distribute through 10 players.

I almost think we need someone like a Rapha that goes through a defense. Those are few and far between but they do make teams that park the bus pay.

The other option seems to be players that can put the ball on goal from a distance. Good things happen when you cannon shots at the goal with teams parking the bus. Deflections and rebounds are just as effective as passing the ball.

I think we have players that possess those skills but can't help but wonder if Farke punishes those traits in training or game conditions.

Over the years I've played for and against teams that beleived in ball control and possession. while it's a low level of play the tactics are the same to break. One of the most effective was crushing the box on restarts. Not necessarily the most skilled play but brute force does overwhelm the defense at times. We don't ever seem to "want it" as bad as our opponents. I do wonder if players like Joffy, Cresswell and Davis didn't have those traits but didn't impress coach. Players like that are often looked at with disdain.

I think the problem with Buendia is not that he would be a great player. I just think that he needs a pure finisher to show his best.

Is their any evidence we are even considering him, or is it just wishful thinking by those on here?

Wishful thinking for a keeper as well please, but as someone else said….if we buy one farke wouldn’t play him so what’s the point.

The main reason not to use the overload continually (as we tend to do) is that any overload in one area by definition means an opponent is free elsewhere !

So if the ball is turned over by the opposition they will look to exploit the space in front quickly & any spaces that have been left open on the transition will be exploited by them as they all know exactly what to do when such a chance happens.

As our fullbacks are within our forward line width when we attack, then we are susceptible for the counter-attack from deep, particularly with our central defenders often in the oppo s half spreading out wide, which I have discussed before. ☺

When in possession our overloads are created by players moving away from their starting position (such as wide players moving into central areas or central players moving out towards the touchlines).
Farke also requires his team to have more than one player in these zones who constantly rotate.

In order to create an overload, all teams need to dominate possession for long enough (as we do well) while our players make the rotating movements required to get into their new attacking positions.
Therefore it is a requisite that our players must be comfortable on the ball to combat any forward 'press' as they risk giving the ball away if they are not good enough.
In fairness our wingers are all good on the ball but as football is a low scoring sport any team who overload in an attacking position must do everything they can to punish their opponents and take advantage & score.👍

Farkes wants our forward (Joseph) to make running movements 'off the ball' to help our supporting players into attacking open spaces.

A decent 10/playmaker is, imo, therefore very important as deep defending teams will be discouraged from engaging with the 'BALL-CARRIER' & if they do then spaces are created to exploit particularly one with a quick brain at Villa.

Looking back on how teams counter us on the breaks it is no wonder that our back four are riddled with Hamstrings problems as they are always having to gallop back chasing the ball & far to often lunging into leg stretching last gasp tackles.
Byram goals or runs into the box often see his gait being over stretched too via his commitment to being decisive with the ball.
All our central defenders are continually been turned & having to chase back far to often, imo, too.

We need a calming player who can dictate our tempo better with passes that do not rely always on the tippy tappy & sudden explosion of pace week in, imo, that now all teams are aware of.

That is what I see, after viewing many of our heat-maps of movements of our players over 90 mins, anyway. 😉
