    Chalky

Here's the explanation for my liking of Pompey ..

Chalky. My dad was a Royal Marine during WW2 and was stationed at Eastney Barracks on the seafront at Portsmouth, although there was no football during the war there were friendly games . He played in goal in quite a few of those with some pompey legends like jimmy Dickenson and Len Phillips. Pompey held the record for holding the FA Cup the longest time. From 1939 to 1945. 😎

That?s a great bit of family history Alf and well worth hearing about, although WW2 was a terrible time there are usually some fascinating family stories like your dad playing at Portsmouth and griffs mum flying planes,I love hearing stuff like that and wished that I had asked my grandparents more about their life when they was alive instead of being more interested in the girl down the road so thanks for sharing your story 😎

He did all his training and then they sent him on the Dieppe raid in a landing craft ,he didn't even make the beach at Dieppe as he got shrapnel wounds on the landing craft and was taken back and he woke up in the mortuary and frightened a nurse to death .😁😁.TBF the wounding probably saved his life as most of those that landed on the beach were mowed down by the German machine guns..luckily he made a good recovery and lived until he was 85. 😎

He woke up in a mortuary? Bloody hell he had led a life hasnt he,part of my job when I worked in a hospital was transferring the deceased from wards etc to the mortuary and sometimes even though they are dead their bodies still move with the gasses inside them, hearing someone fart when you are taking them to the mortuary can be very unnerving to those who are new on the job

My Grandad was not exactly Uncle Albert when it came to WW11.. he didn?t like talking about it and always changed the subject.
I do know he was stationed in Malta but that?s it, his medals were generic & no pictures etc so unsure what he was in, Army/RAF etc.
    What I do remember:
Malta was our family holiday, same 2 weeks, same place & he knew a lot of people over there who probably stayed after the war & built lives there.
He saved my life when I was about 6 on one of the holidays, I took ill and a Doctor said it was a tummy upset. He didn?t believe him & took me to the Hospital for a second opinion and an hour later had my appendix removed as it was about to burst.
I still wear & have never taken off the gold Maltese cross he brought my Nana back from the war which I got when she passed about 30 years ago.
I was in Malta with Mrs BDB when Diana died and watched it all on TV over there. Unfortunately the Hotel we stayed at made Fawlty Towers look like the Ritz & she never would hear of giving it another chance so not been back since.
