It wasn't aimed at you SM - I should have said "...if one believes...".

    That is my fear!

I believe that there is a chance of peace now. It is clear to me that supporting Ukraine is for financial gains and now they have made it clear that the cost to Ukraine is their mineral deposits.
Whilst ever there is war there is no way of accessing them.

I also believe that this week has been theatre played out for the world to see the ludicrous situation that European politicians want this war to continue!

    Just my view.

The concern for me is that many in Russia resent the ending of the former USSR and the worry for these former USSR states is that Russia will in time use military force to take back these now soverign countries, as they are doing with Russia. This for me (anmd just my opiniion from reading a bit of history) has echoes of how the German empire was carved up after WW1 and eventually led to the Nazi's ultimate plan of Lebensraum, aiming to capture their former territories and move even further into Russia where they had large German settlements in the 19th century.

So if we are in general agreement that Britain and the allies were just in standing up to the Nazis's plans as they activated their plans with the invasion of Poland, shouldn't we be just as concerned and vigilant in uniting with other countries to oppose Putin's first moves in invading Ukraine? In what was is the current situation different to then? Also, remember that Chamberlain thought he had averted being pulled into the war by the Munich agreement, whereby we agreed that Germany could take the Sudetenland if it promised not to make further demands for European land. Concessions with such leaders rarely produces what we want - we need to know their 'end plan'.

We could take the view that Putin doesn't have eyes on anything beyond the former USSR countries and therefore shouldn't get involved, leave tthem to defend themselves. But again, looking at history, Germany and the Nazi's initially only wanted back their former 1918 Empire estates, but it didn't stop them going into surrounding countries including coming for us. I personally don't think appeasement of such leaders and their actions in invading soverign countries, and should confront them at source. Just my opinion, but one with some history reading behind it.

How far Putin will go as you say is the question , certainly appeasing Hitler in 1936 didn't prevent WW2 but I think it's important to look at this in today's world .

A Russian empire that stops on the German border and includes the former eastern bloc in my opinion isn't really in play .

The Russians don't have a population in need of more land , what economic benefits would Russia gain from annexing the former eastern bloc ?

The Russians haven't defeated Ukraine as yet and that's in 3 years of conflict , I don't fancy their chances too much of annexing the former eastern bloc and keeping the natives at bay , I wouldn't push my luck in the former Yugoslavia either .

The country's that once formed the USSR again isn't a shoe in , the Russians got their asses handed to them in Kosovo initially .

These country's as Ukraine have proved will fight Putin with their teeth if they are invaded and just how many " Forever Wars " can Putin sustainably fight ?

Not only that just how many more Russian parents are going to put up with their sons coming home in body bags before they also become a threat .

Russians have form when it comes to revolutions .

The Ukraine situation would be my test , let's get a deal on the table that Putin can save face with and Zelensky gets to a road to economic prosperity with the minerals in his country .

    Let?s face it.

If Putin wanted to he could have levelled Kiev!

    He has chosen not to!

Like us I think Putin expected a better performance from his attack

Militarily he ended up with a mid table performance against a plucky defence

Apparently, Zelenskyy is now prepared to sign Trump's deal.
