Remember when you got this brown envelope on a Friday.
You Ist looked at the back, which showed your net, gross and tax deductions.
Some week it was bulging if you did a lot of over time , then you had to count it to make sure it was correct.
You felt different than when you got paid in the bank .

One of my work mates , used to hate dirty or creased notes he used to storm over the office demanding new notes .
They would label him OSD nowadays .
Another mate , we worked for BT , his wife used to wait outside the depot for his wage packet ,
Other wise it would be all gone to the bookies on his lunch break .
Ours used to have the corner of the envelope cut away so you could count it before opening, was always something quite wholesome about been paid weekly in cash, does anyone get weekly pay nowadays?

I got itchy feet to try something else and left to join Chubb alarms , after another year another alarm firm offered me a job with a better salary and a company car.
Then there was a twist of fate ,I had been out all night on call just got to bed at 6-30 am .
The phone rang at 7 am can you do a call in Walsall,we can't get anyone else . The rules was if you was out all nighht you got a least a morning off .
So I ended up going to this tyre place by Walsall Manor hospital .
I had to work on a roller shutter door and I dropped my side cutters . I went down the ladder and a voice said these are GPO cutters .
It was my old Level 1 manager .
He asked how I was , I told him I was fed up off being used .
He said would I like to come back with the GPO , I said once you leave you couldn't get back on .
Leave it with I'll phone you tonight .

I earned great money but doing 70 hours a week wrecked my body .
I didn't need the money but was addicted to work and pushing myself , should have listened to my wife .
I took my BT redundancy and did another couple of years subbing ,then retired early to look after my Mom with vascular dementia .
