    Hi Soulman
Have not been abroad for very many years but remember that I saved up money from one of my first jobs (with the help of my parents who reduced my "keep" payments) to go on a 6th form art trip to Italy which was split between Florence and Venice. Loved both places and would love to be able to return some day.

Venice was just as it appears in movies like "Death in Venice", "Don't Look Now" or various Bond movies and you are surrounded by history, art and all that famous renaissance architecture plus the colour/light and, of course, the canals and gondolas. Speaking of Bond movies, we were actually there when they were filming "Moonraker" in St Marks Square (didn't get to meet Sir Roger unfortunately, but did see him). Must have been 78/79?

As one of the most heavily visited cities, I think Venice recently played with the idea of limiting the number of tourists or charging at one point and, like many tourists traps, it has had problems with affordable accommodation for locals. It has also had to deal with the costs of maintaining its historic buildings and health and flood issues from the canal waters at various times. I'm sure it is still a beautiful city though and am sure your wife and sisters will have a great time.

Trust you and Bella will be fine though and you'll get time to relax yourself and get to play your guitar.

I last went to Venice in 2018, as part of a ‘top to toe’ rail journey in Italy. We were there in April, before it became too busy and it is a beautiful, historical city, a fascinating place. We stayed in a lovely hotel, a former convent, about 15/20 minute walk from St Marks Square. It was so peaceful, the hotel itself a lovely building. It was just a few days in what was a wonderful trip through Italy, with no driving involved, rail travel is the way to go. We started from Turin and finished up in Sicily, traveled with Great Rail Journeys, thoroughly recommended.

Our elder son used to be a Navigation Officer with P&O Cruises and we (SWMBO and I) had a Mediterranean Cruise which docked at Venice. We spent the day there?very busy and very expensive, particularly St Marks Square ! Tremendous time though experiencing life around the canal.
    (Bit like Brum?)

Been a couple of times. First time was when I caught a boat to the Middle East. I recall standing on the deck looking at Venice as we slowly made our way. Suddenly we passed the Square and it was a wonderful sight. Another time I was in the Square sleeping (dossing). A policeman kicked me and told me to move on. Lovely and unique place.

She went to Rome last October her Ist flight for around 40 years ,so I proud of her facing the fear of flying .

Glad to read they're having a good time Lloyd. I went there in March '93 or there abouts.

While there's obviously a lot of history to appreciate I thought it was a dump in and of itself in all honesty.

Expensive, rubbish everywhere and smelly. A bit like Birmingham really with different accents and less canals 😉.
