    Can anyone explain

what will happen to prices if I change from Gas Central Heating to electric?

At present I use 3410kWh of gas per month, when the heating is on. it costs me 5.95p per kWh cost ?202.90
At present I also use 479.68 kWh of electricity per month which costs me 30.23p per kWh

If I need 3410kWh of gas to heat my home, will I need 3410 kWh of electricity to heat my home

Will I have to pay for an extra 3410 x 30.23p = ?1030 for electricity. Gas at present costs ?202.90.

    what am I missing?

Thanks Rross. I was hoping we might have a heating expert who could give some advice. Would not trust any politician to give an honest answer. Not my default position but there seems to have been a decline in standards recently.

If my gas heating uses 3400kWh to heat my home for a month, is it reasonable to assume that I will need 3400kWh of electricity to achieve the same level of heat?

Depends what kind of electric and how efficient the gas boiler is. If it's a modern boiler then probably about 90% efficiency, and 3400kWh of gas will give you 3060kWh of heat. And then it depends what kind of electric heating your thinking of. If it's just panel heaters then they're 100% efficient so you'd need 3060kWh of electricity to provide the same amount of heat. A heat pump is about 250% efficient, so you'd only need 1224kWh of electricity for 3060kWh of heat

Brilliant AuldYin. 1224kWh of electricity at 30.23p per kWh would cost me about ?370 using these figures and I currently pay ?202 for the gas equivalent. Will just hope to keep using gas.

That's why people are reluctant to move from gas to electric. It's not that electric is too dear it's that gas is too cheap.
