Hamshaw's Headaches

Assuming that he'll be offered the permanent position, which I imagine is highly likely, Hamshaw's mind must be turning to preparations for next season.

His priority must be to persuade Haks and Cam to sign new contracts - if he's successful, we could start the season with some stability and he could build his team around these two.

A new keeper is essential; not just sound between the sticks but capable of decent distribution.

His back line of Rafferty, Haks, Hull & James is reasonable but he must look for alternatives for Raggett and Jules given their injury woes.

I'd have Humphreys as my holding midfielder and give Powell the license to roam as he did against Blackpool to great effect. After the loanees are returned, I reckon he should ship out MacDonald and McWilliams who are not up to League One level imo. Kelly may have a season left in him but will not be reliable as a constant so there's work to be done in recruiting width and decent cover.

Up front, Nombe is the only shoe-in but I suspect Hugill will improve his contribution under Hammy's guidance. We should work on Holmes and JJ to increase their contributions and, depending on the outcome of the Owls' financial issues, it might be worth a cheeky bid to bring in Wilks permanent. The other forwards should be moved on if possible.

Assuming TS is willing to offer Hamshaw a Centenary budget boost to bring in players with the Millers' ethos and, assuming we can bring in a couple of decent loanees, we could build a squad which is capable of delivering far more than the dismal offerings we've seen this season.

It's a mammoth task but I reckon MH and AW have what it takes to deliver!

As for Nombe - if we want to finish mid table again next year he’s a shoe-in. If we want to make any sort of challenge then he bench material at best. Hard work isn’t enough.

Sadly I can’t see either Humphries or Haks staying. It will therefore be another massive rebuild and I’m not convinced there will be much of a budget.

Biggest decision will be do hamshaw and Warrington follow warne to Huddersfield at the end of the season. Some big games coming up that may influence that decision

I agree with you on McWilliams but not Nombe, he made both goals yesterday and scored in midweek. Playing under a manager that motivates you will get 15 to 20 goals and at least 10 assists from him and that isn't easy to replace.
The real challenge is in the backroom, needing some independent expertise on why are we having so many injuries and investment in that area is key. There is the issue of contract management, but that isn't a MH job.
The other thing for me is squad size, we went into the season without a full squad, we left the January window with a smaller squad. We need to use the U21 rule to enable us to have cover in all key positions.

It's down to the board to get this right quickly. Still a number of empty seats yesterday but clearly Hamshaw has sufficient supporter backing (as well as knowledge, experience, etc) to be worth a punt. Haks celebration yesterday wasn't one of a player disinterested in the club, and with the right manager/offer in front of him, I wouldn't be stunned by him signing a new deal. Humphreys remains a concern and I'd imagine far likelier to leave.

There are a few players we have next year who signed the standard Evans two-year deal, so along with Nombe and (assuming we won't do the sensible thing) Hugill, he has a nucleus to work with and the challenge he has may end up being about who to extend the deals on than having to find almost an entire squad. The point around getting some younger players in is exhausted so I won't bang on about it, but I just hope we don't get caught up in any excitement around the 148th anniversary, the local lad managing, or TS's (maybe) last dance, and think it's Championship at any cost - what follows takes years off fans.

Humphreys isn't a midfield player keep saying only in emergencies. Another keeper left back for starters then see who stays. Release Mcdonald Green Kayode at least. Need a wide right player. Cover some utility players.

I would like you to be correct about Nombe but I can't see where you get 15/20 goals from. I have not seen the last two games but i have seen the majority since he joined and calling him "jigsaw" wouldnt be far off the mark.

If we could get a midfielder like a Barlaser or Frecklington who can pick key passes then I reckon Nombe would get a good few goals.
Service to him has been pretty poor all season and he is forced to spend too much time chasing lost causes.
Wilks has one decent game in five so he can go back at the end of the season for me. He has a decent level of ability but not the application and we should be aiming for someone with more consistency.
I would like us to give Jack Holmes an extension to his contract because there could be a lot more to come from him with decent coaching (Hamshaw was a very consistent winger) rather than the bullying methods of the previous "manager."
