I still think Tony is a good manager and that we have a good squad. Whats really missing after being able to outplay all the top teams in this division is a lethal mentality in front of goal. Weve really been poor in this department. The determination in front of goal. Other than that were more than a match for the top 4. Valencia scored the winner in the 95th minute. A cracking goal too. The look on Mbappes, Bellinghams, Modrics faces etc. A team that has been blasting sides apart this season came up against a very determined Valencia who had 3 key players missing. I tuned in 5 minutes into the match expecting Valencia to be a goal down. Rode their luck a few times but what a turn around.
(Apologies for removing the punctuation, the question marks are irritating)
Darren Moore was out of his depth with us. I don?t think I?ve ever seen a bigger tactical mess the game that lost him his job against Ipswich. There were other games similar to that.
The insistence of playing out from the back with Bartley, Dawson and a midfield with no movement.
Really pleased for Carlos who must be especially pleased at having success with his childhood club. He undoubtedly did a great job for us but whilst I recognize this, I also recognize that towards the end of his tenure his style of play here was not only unattractive but also not working for us. Even fans of his achievements here could see that we too often appeared to play with the handbrake on and, if we did get that first goal, we sat back far to early to defend a tenuous lead which only invited pressure and mostly led to the opposition getting one back.
Certainly, he got the team playing far better defensively but even if he had the better quality players we have acquired since (Heggem, Styles, Price, Johnston) at his disposal, do many of us think he would have altered his tactics or achieved more? Sometimes, it is just time to move on.
As for TM, he hasn't got the same quality to work with that he had before when he was with us but when you look at our over all performances against the better teams in this league you cannot say we are poorer than them. It's obvious that our biggest and clearest issue is lack of goals and -as mentioned already by several on here-there are other things he could certainly work on to help this but he has got them playing more attacking football than we saw under CC.
The intent and desire from the players seems there but we need to convert all the huffing and puffing into goals. A change of formation and working harder at spotting runs along with more time spent on set pieces on the training ground would all seem pretty obvious things to explore but once the goals do start to come then confidence will follow and momentum should grow.
Realistically, of course I cannot see us getting promoted, but I would like to see us finish in the top 6 and if we can get over this hump in time, I believe that this is still achievable. Next season will then be more time spent on rebuilding.
Totally agree Matt! I was at Leeds when we were hammered and so many players were out of position it was embarrassing. Port Vale supporters were calling for his head earlier in the season but it?s league 2 FFS.
Carlos was made for Valencia as the defence were shockingly poor and he?s ground out some good results so fair play to him.
Carlos before he left couldn?t get anything more out of the players and Mowbray is in the same boat. So for me the quality of most of our players is average at best. Shocking keeper - Furlong good going forward but loses sight of his man defending consistently - love JM but he lacks quality - Mowatt too slow and passes sideways and backwards - Grant and Johnston decent but lack the end product - Armstrong shows very little desire and effort despite getting a poor service, Diangana is a complete fairy. So in conclusion the team lacks quality and a cutting edge. We are where we are because we are NOT good enough.
I would start Griffiths and Diakite on Tuesday for sure and Dike needs to be unleashed.
That said - I can see nothing but a win for Bristol and Coventry when we go there. What does that tell you?
I agree Boingy with regard to Mogga. He is still trying to get his style of play (as he said himself a few weeks ago) and is only three months into the job to be fair. You correctly identify the issue we have in front of goal. I am sure we will get there under TM providing the fans and club owner give him time. I think the owner will, not sure the same can be said about some fans.
We have six games to go so we could possibly make the playoffs but we are up against three sides trying to make the playoffs and three sides trying to avoid relegation, so it is not going to be easy.
As you say we need to start scoring goals.
(And yes the ??? are most annoying. Surely it is not beyond the wit of man to sort that out.
We all see things differently BM. In my view the club made an error letting him go when they did. We were struggling and one cannot argue with that. However, we were fourth in the table when they fired him. We were still in with a decent shout. They then employed Jimmy Shan. Well that turned out well did it not.
The point is, it was a grave error to dismiss DM at that point and it proved so. Who knows how that season would have ended, we cannot say. What we do know is it did not end how we wanted it too. So leaving DM in place until the seasons end may, just may have made the difference.
No surprise CC is doing so well at Valencia, he?s the ideal coach to sort out a mess and get the team playing well and more often than not above themselves, but let?s see how it is in 18 months time when he?s run out of ideas as he did at West Brom, then?s the time to upgrade and work on the good work CC has done, unfortunately for us at the moment it doesn?t look like we have
I agree Bomber. Let?s be honest we are not good enough even if Pepe were in charge. Poor keeper - Furlong can?t mark his player - weak midfield - no creativity or quality.
Not one single player including Fellows could cut it in the Premier. Are you confident of three points at Bristol? Well that tells the story.
Put Diakite and Griffiths in Tuesday and start Dike. I have mentioned quality but those two misses from JM and Dike alone tells you we lack it!
